This is an excellent class for building and reinforcing understanding of core grammatical concepts in preparation for middle and high school. We will use the grammar workbook by Evan-Moor titled Grammar and Punctuation, Grade 6. I have used this book in my work teaching English grammar for the last year or so, and I love it. I have found it to be clear and thorough with engaging, fun exercises. We will begin at the key structural concept of defining the sentence and establishing understanding of subject and a predicate. Next, we will examine simple versus compound sentences and expand from there into exploring pronouns, verb tenses, and other important grammatical concepts (for a full list, see the class-by-class breakdown below.) The workbook is organized into 'rules" and devotes a chapter to each rule. After each rule, the book offers varied and fun exercises designed to reinforce each concept. We will read through each rule, and then we will work together through the exercises, completing the first half of the workbook. (Students can take the follow-up course to this one, Grammarama II, to complete the second half of the book.) WEEK 1 Class 1: What is a sentence? Four types of sentences End punctuation Subject and predicate Class 2: What is a sentence? continued Compound and simple sentences What is a noun? Class 3: Common versus proper nouns Pluralizing nouns (regular and irregular plurals) What is a verb? WEEK 2 Class 1: Linking versus action verbs subject-verb agreement verb tenses Class 2: Pronouns (basic) Use of subject versus object pronoun Indefinite, demonstrative and interrogative pronouns Class 3: Possessive nouns (use of the apostrophe)

Students will need a new copy of the workbook Grammar and Punctuation Grade 6, Evan-Moor. I will send each student registered for the class a link to the correct book. Copies must be new because this is a workbook in which we will be writing extensively.

Hello!
My name is Lisa Bagchi, and I run many different classes on Outschool. Favorites include reading classes that center around discussion of theme, character, diction, and whatever else we can find, as well as creative writing groups in which we explore ideas through the written word, share work, and offer encouraging feedback.
I am a certified English/language arts teacher and have been a middle and high school teacher for over a decade. In addition to core English, I've created and taught many elective courses, including Poetry Out Loud, Flash Fiction and Fairy Tale Studies. I am also a private reading and writing tutor.
I believe that learning and play are deeply interwoven. I aim to create a feeling of community and joy in my classes, and to foster a supportive dynamic among learners. I love watching students light up, laugh, work through challenges, and become more confident learners.
I am also mom to a wonderful nineteen year old and a huge animal and nature lover. My favorite activities include pizza and a movie or playing cards with my son, my daily walk with my dogs, Moka and Floki, and sitting by the lake near my house with a good book. I also have three cats, one of whom likes to follow Moka and me on our walks if she catches us leaving! Moka may just show up in my Outschool classes from time to time...and a kitty or two may sneak in as well.
Hope to see you there!
