Take a look at these two sentences: 1. The boy ate an ice cream while sitting in the heat. 2. The young boy, joyous and grateful, ate a refreshing, sweet vanilla ice cream cone while sitting in the sweltering heat. Which sentence is more compelling? Which offers a fuller picture of the scenario being described? Which makes you want to learn more about the little boy enjoying a cold treat on a hot day? The second sentence, of course. But why? Well, simple: those little descriptive words make a huge difference. In this class, we will look at how to enrich writing and speaking by using descriptive words. Students will be taught what adjectives are, as well as tips on how to incorporate them into their writing and speaking. We will look at different examples of adjectives in various sentences and reading excerpts, as well as practice filling in the blanks of sentences using the correct target words. Students will also create their own descriptive passage to share with the class. At the end of class, students will be given an optional homework assignment to help them practice what they learned in class. Students, if they choose, may submit this homework to the teacher via the Outschool classroom for grading as a way to assess their learning. All in all, this class will be jam-packed with information in a highly interactive way, with the majority of the work happening in the here-and-now of the class session. By the time this class is over, students should be comfortable with implementing adjectives into their writing and speaking.
