Why do people rarely complete their New Year's resolutions? Why do a majority of people who set goals fail to achieve them?
In order for goal-setting to be successful, we must go beyond just writing down "I want to earn better grades this semester" or "I will learn to play the guitar this month." Goals are just wishes without a specific plan to achieve them; this is where a set timeline, weekly milestones, and daily action steps come in.
Now, even when we know exactly how to achieve our goals, we can lose motivation to work on them, especially if we are not seeing an obvious change in just a few short days. By relating the life experience and personal development you earn while completing your goals to a leveling system, you are better able to visualize the progress you are making and feel motivation to continue to improve!

In RPG games, it is so satisfying to complete quests and watch your character level up and gain new skills and abilities. Most people forget that RPG games are based on real life! So let's set goals and complete in-real-life (IRL) quests to gain experience and improve our stats!

In this one-time class, we will walk through a research-based process of creating meaningful, SMART goals and breaking them down into milestones and action steps, and then we will gamify the process by assigning experience points and (DND-style) stats to each task.

In class, learners will:
-> Self-assess their current strengths and areas for improvement (their "Starting Stats")
-> Choose 1-3 meaningful goals to work on over a 4-week timeline (envisioning the Hero they want to be)
-> Break goals down into milestones and action steps (Quests!)
-> Learn to track progress (including gaining EXP, Stats, and Levels)
-> Discuss ways they can customize and personalize the process to make it work best for them!

Although it is not required, learners are encouraged to look over the reference sheet (provided upon enrollment) prior to class to begin thinking about what kinds of goals they may be interested in pursuing. We will discuss these in more detail in class!

In addition to being an avid gamer for over 20 years, I have a passion for bullet journaling and psychology-based self-improvement strategies. The structure of this class utilizes my knowledge of educational psychology and curricular design from my Masters in Teaching, my experience as a teacher, as well as research and theories from my personal study of over a dozen popular self-improvement authors such as Stephen R.
