Welcome! I'm thrilled that you're considering diving into the world of game development. Creating your own games is not only a rewarding creative process but also a highly valuable skill. Whether you're completely new to coding or just getting started, I'm here to guide you through the fundamentals of game development using Godot, a powerful and free game engine. Who can take this course? How long does it take? This mentorship program is specifically designed for beginners with little or no prior coding experience. We start from the ground up, learning real-world programming concepts that will give you the confidence to create your own games. In this class, we learn by doing! The course is flexible—whether you're in for the long haul or just need a few sessions to grasp the basics, I'm here to support you. What do we actually do during class? After class? This is a hands-on, practical learning experience. We won't just discuss game development—we'll actually be building games! From day one, we'll dive into Godot, and I'll guide you through every step of the process. You'll see my screen, follow along with clear instructions, and have the opportunity to ask questions and experiment as we go. Each session is recorded, so you'll have the freedom to revisit lessons and refine your skills at your own pace. You can also reach out to me between sessions with questions or for feedback all along the way. How much work is expected of students? Are there grades or tests? There are no grades or tests in this course—your progress is self-determined. I might suggest additional practice or optional homework, but the pace and depth of your learning are entirely up to you. The more you engage, explore, and inquire, the more you'll benefit from this experience. Do we learn game design theory during this course? While this is primarily a technical tutoring program focused on programming and mastering Godot, we'll also talk about the fundamentals of game design. You'll learn how to think like a game developer, understanding what makes games fun, engaging, and challenging, so you can create your own unique experiences. What kind of games will we make? We’ll start with simple, manageable projects that introduce you to the core concepts of game development. As you grow more confident, we'll tackle more complex ideas, allowing you to create games that reflect learner interests. Whether you're dreaming of building platformers, action games, or something entirely different, this course will equip you with the skills to bring your ideas to life. --- Please Note: As we learn cover more complex or personalized topics, we are guaranteed to encounter tricky and unexpected bugs along the way. Even bugs that are a surprise to me. This is the nature of computer programming. Learning how to track down and solve these issues is one of the most important parts of game development and coding in general. Adjusting and adapting to the unexpected is part of the job, and will sometimes be a part of this course.

Hello! I'm Joey and I'm excited to meet you. As a parent, I understand how vital early childhood education is. The fact that you are here, searching for the best instructor for your learners, means that you know how important it is too. I take this responsibility seriously, and work hard to provide individual attention and support to all of my students.
I've worked professionally as a software developer, as well as an adjunct college professor teaching introductory and advanced computer programming courses. My passions and class topics are wide ranging, from tabletop role-playing games to 3D modeling, astronomy, and art! To each of my classes I bring the same philosophy: that we truly grow when we connect what we learn to what is important to us. No matter if it's academic study or a social activity, I teach with the intention of inspiring students to make those connections and get excited about learning. I can't wait to see you in class!
