Each week we may have a homework sheet to be completed at home. We will discuss this during class. Homework is not mandatory but is highly encouraged. It should only take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete.

I will send out feedback to the parents at the end of the semester. I will check in with the parents sooner if the learner is struggling in a specific area. I always welcome questions/comments during the semester.

Experiencia de clase

Nivel de inglés: desconocido
Grado de EE. UU. 1
Review or get ahead for first grade math! This semester long course covers the first half of first grade math. My classes are interactive and fun. I like to engage the children and we all problem solve together. I use props, a whiteboard, and fun animated PowerPoint slides during my lessons. I always encourage learner interaction and I check in occasionally with a thumb's up to make sure there are no questions before we proceed. After the lesson objectives are taught, we complete a worksheet together during class. We play a quick game of Bingo at the end of class that reinforces the objectives of the class (the answers are our Bingo numbers!).

The topics for this semester cover:

Week 1: Numbers to 50 (count, read, write)
Understanding place value (ones, tens, bundles)
Week 2: Understanding the properties of operations
Math fact families (numbers to 20) - relationship between addition and subtraction
Week 3: Skip counting to 50 (by 2s, 5s, 10s)
Addition/subtraction within 20 (objects, ten frames, number line, counting on)
Week 4: Measurement and data (compare lengths, represent and interpret data)
Time (analog and digital – hour, half hour)
Week 5: Money (coins - value, equivalent values)
Geometry (2D shapes, compose new shapes, halves, quarters, whole)

I will send out files for the week's lessons. This may include a homework sheet, a practice sheet that we do together during class, and a Bingo card. The homework can be completed and uploaded to the classroom or sent to me via Outschool email. I may also suggest "extra practice". This work is not required but will give your learner some extra activities for home. We will start each lesson reviewing the homework from the prior week.

I have 3 different first grade classes listed for semester 1. They are all different formats (per requests from parents) but cover the exact same 10 lessons. You may choose which format works best for your learner. They are as follows:

Fun With First Grade Math: Semester 1 (Camp) - meets twice/week for 5 weeks
Fun With First Grade Math: Semester 1 - meets once/week for 10 weeks
Ongoing First Grade Math: Semester 1 - meets weekly and rotates through the 10 lessons (each lesson is standalone so you may join at any time)

**If you are interested in a multi-day section (specific day/time) that has already started, please message me about a discount for the week/s you may have missed**

See you in the classroom.

Lista de útiles escolares
The learners will need to print some worksheets at home. They should always have a notebook and pencil. Blocks of any kind (same length/size, different lengths/colors), and something to count (Cheerios, M&Ms, etc). We will also learn about coins. If you can, please collect 25 pennies, 5 nickels, 10 dimes, and 4 quarters. I will send out an email ahead of time if materials are needed for the next class.

Hello! My name is Erin Howard. I love teaching young learners. My passion is to help your young learner gain the knowledge and confidence in their basic math skills. My math classes focus on skills such as solving word problems, learning math fact families, place value, telling time, geometry, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

I have my bachelor’s degree from Mount Holyoke College. I have owned a home daycare, privately tutored students in math, and was a teaching assistant in college. I have taught over 8,000 classes online.

My goal is to bring fun, excitement, and passion into my classroom. It is important for young learners to be engaged, actively participate, and enjoy learning. This builds the foundation of how they will view their journey for knowledge in the future. I know I have accomplished this goal when my students continue to return to my classroom, and I see their personal improvement and how proud they are of their progress.

Outside of work, I am a mother of five children, and I have three grandchildren. My children are my pride and joy. My youngest two children are twins. They are nineteen years old and they are sophomores in college. We enjoy cooking, baking, playing with our dog, watching movies, shopping, and taking trips to visit new places.

I look forward to this journey with you and your young learner. I will see you in the classroom.
