A total of 80 sight and high frequency words will be taught and reinforced in this ongoing class. In this course we presume that each child has already learned the ABC song and the associated sounds to each letter. This class covers sight words; so although knowing the alphabet is useful to help recognize letters, we all know that many words clearly cannot be taught using the "sound it out" method. Ultimately, learning will be achieved by introducing and discussing the concepts to be taught in class, then supported through practice out of class using a study app, and through repetition and practice writing and reading each day. 

Practicing and mastering each lesson will be supported in part by using a fun and free study app called Quizlet that your student can use at home anytime outside of our structured lessons. Students may also be asked to complete short worksheets for homework (mostly coloring): nothing intense, just frequent repetition for mastery!

As this an ongoing class the site words will vary as we progress through a list of 80 sight words, so a break down of that will not be provided here. However, generally speaking, each class will be structured as follows with variation in order to adapt to each groups grasp of the words taught and their preference for games:

General Daily Structure of Class:
5 minute greeting welcoming kids to the class
15 minutes:
Introduce word 1 ( example  "they")
The word is defined and then used in context. Then the kids are challenged to use the word  in their own context in order to ensure comprehension, and / or they are asked questions which contain the whole word being studied.
Next the children are asked to write the word down.
Then the students create/draw a little picture that has something to do with that word: ex. "They came" and to draw a picture of the ants who came to a picnic. The word "they" and the word "came" are studied as whole words.
This process is done with each of the 80 words throughout the weeks of the program.
The next activity can involve eye-spy, charades, a game of "space-man" or "Mr. Potato Head" or a number of other games.

At least once a week, a "review" day with approximately the same program structure will be taught. By t]he end of week 5 we will begin all over again for new students who may have dropped in half way through the lessons (for example) or for students who just need more review. As this is an ongoing class, parents can subscribe to the class or unsubscribe at any time they wish. Please note, that the list of vocabulary words taught as whole words will not be limited to the words as presented below: this is just to demonstrate our minimum.

Metas de aprendizaje
The goal in this class is not only to introduce these high frequency words and sight words to the children, but to provide for them different ways to review and practice the words.

    Hello! Welcome to TeachAcres Inc.
    Our classes are dedicated to socio-emotional learning, conflict resolution, effective communication, English Reading/Writing, Indigenous History, and learning through Art, and my favourite ADHD Coaching!
    My name is Kelene McCaffrey.
    I am a qualified licensed Canadian teacher working on my Masters of Education. My certifications are: Teacher (Certificate of Qualification), TESOL, and CCRC (Mediation). I have many years of experience teaching communication skills online, teaching ESL, tutoring 1-1, and have in-person classroom experience. I also have an extensive business background.  I have completed ADHD Training through PESI, and am currently working through an ASD Executive Function Coach Internship.  I strongly believe in student focused learning as opposed to straight lectures.
    
    Why me?
    I am always trying to be that engaging teacher that students can't wait to meet again online. I try to make my lessons lively and student focused. I have home-schooled my own children, taught preschoolers to read, taught E.S.L. and Junior High, helped tutor High School and University students with their writing skills, and worked as a Sales Trainer. Presently, my main focus and training is for ADHD students. One can safely assume that teaching and supporting students is my VIBE!
    
    Aside from my business, mediation and teaching side, I grew up in a French bilingual home where my mother encouraged my music and cartooning interests. As a result, today, my hobbies include, but are not limited to, playing piano, writing music, and dabbling in cartoon drawings.
