Learners should do the pre-requisite one time class of Fun Chemistry - Introduction to Periodic Table (Junior School or High School level) to provide a common foundation for these ongoing classes. An introduction to the periodic table will be covered in this course. Topics will include the concepts of atoms, elements, brief trends in the table, chemical reactions, radiation, redox reactions, etc. Fun slides will be presented while the teacher interacts with open friendly questions and shows models and some simple experiments. Some learners will interact a great deal during class and are welcome to ask and answer questions at any point. Other learners may prefer to learn quietly and this is perfectly fine too. Some of these concepts can be a bit complex, but it is hoped that learners will gain a basic understanding of the terms and ideas to build a foundation for high school. Week of December 31st - Periodic Table Week of January 7th - Group 1 Elements - Hydrogen/Sodium - s orbitals and chemical reactions will be touched on Week of January 14th - Group 2 Elements - Magnesium/Calcium - radioactivity of alpha, beta, and gamma particles will be discussed Week of January 21st - Group 3 Elements - Aluminum - p orbitals, sp hybridization of group 3 elements and more chemical equations Week of January 28th - Group 4 Elements - Carbon - sp hybridization, importance of carbon, some organic chemistry naming, how to build molecules using household items Week of February 4th - Group 5 Elements - Nitrogen/Phosphorus - orbitals and hybridization, Lewis electron dot formulas, and balancing chemical reactions Week of February 11th - Group 5 Elements - more on this group. Redox reactions, trends, and chemical processes Week of February 18th - Group 6 Elements - Part A - Oxygen/Sulfur - hydrogen bonding, more redox reactions, and importance of sulfur Week of February 25th - Group 6 Elements - Part B Week of March 3rd - Essential Carbon, Hydrogen, and Oxygen Week of March 10th - Balancing chemical equations - start with concepts from baking a cake and candies representing atoms in reactions Week of March 17th - Introduction to organic chemistry - making molecules Week of March 24th - Redox Reactions and batteries Week of March 31st - Group 7 Elements - Chlorine - p orbitals, balancing chemical reactions, acid reactions Week of April 7th - Radiation versus radioactivity Week of April 14th - Group 8 Elements - Helium/Neon - solubility product and equilibrium product The class will repeat again, starting with the Periodic Table class. There are 16 classes before a repeat of classes occurs. Classes can be taken starting at any time.
Metas de aprendizaje
Learners will improve their knowledge of the periodic table and its elements, plus gain a basic understanding of chemistry at an introductory high school level.
