In this class, students will learn all about atomic models, structures, and electron configurations.

In the first week of the class, we will spend the first meeting talking about the "thought experiments" conducted by the ancient Greeks, along with the discoveries and models developed by John Dalton, J. J. Thomson, and Ernest Rutherford. The second meeting will involve a Kahoot! game to test student comprehension.

In the second week of class, we will talk about the Bohr model of the atom and solving problems involving electrons and orbitals. Students will be tested using a Kahoot! exercise in the second meeting.

In the third week of class, we will introduce quantum physics and the quantum model. We will learn about s-p-d-f orbitals and how to write electron configurations in s-p-d-f notation using a chart of the orbitals by increasing energy. Students will again be given a homework assignment between the two meetings, and the second meeting of the week will include a Kahoot! exercise to test student comprehension.

In the final week of class, we will continue to talk about the quantum atomic model, but this time we will learn another method for finding the electron configuration notation. Students will be given homework to practice this new method and then will be tested on it using Kahoot! in the final meeting of the class.

Students should be familiar with math involving fractions for this course. However, no scientific knowledge is required; even though we will cover topics as complex as quantum physics, we will also learn/review simpler topics, such as what subatomic particles are and where these subatomic particles are located in atoms.

This is a simplified version of my atomic physics class for 12-16 year olds. If your student loves science and wants a little challenge, this class will be perfect! :)
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will learn the history of the model of the atom and the names of the people associated with each model.
Students will learn vocabulary associated with atoms.
Students will learn how to count electrons in orbitals using the Bohr model.
Students will learn how to write electron configurations in s-p-d-f notation.

Orientación para padres
Kahoot! is used in this class to test comprehension. No account is required--a code will be provided at the start of class for the student to join the game. Please contact me if you have any concerns.
Lista de útiles escolares
Students will be provided with a vocabulary sheet that will summarize everything that will be learned in the class and will assist them in remembering everything presented to them in the class.
Students will be provided with homework sheets every week (except the first week).
