Students will begin learning French and cover age-appropriate topics throughout the 3 x 10 week blocks of learning.
Each class will include speaking and listening exercises, with some reading and short writing tasks as we progress through the year.
Students will complete and present a Project at the end of each 10-week Cycle. I will suggest a Topic, but students are welcome to choose their own theme or approach. Each Project will consist of a written presentation and a spoken component, either a video or audio file.
We will do conversations in French from the first lesson, and I will reduce the amount of English spoken in class as the year progresses. Scaffolding will be provided for students that need it and alternatives to the written and spoken components of the Projects will be provided according to the students' needs.
I spend some time in France during the academic year. I may be able to take the class to visit a local town in the summer when the days are long enough! French time is EST +6 hours, so our class is at 9.45pm French time and all the shops in our local town will be closed!!! Only one café is open at that time!

Week 1. Tuesday 12th September.
Getting to know each other and establishing a baseline for the students:
Ask briefly if they have studied French before, what they are confident to say and what they understand.
Basic questions and answers. Model my replies.
Comment tu t’appelles? Je m’appelle…
Où habites-tu? J’habite aux États Unis. J'habite dans une grande ville/une petite ville/un village/à la campagne.
Counting 0 - 20.
Quel âge as-tu? J’ai ….ans.

French alphabet. With support, learn to spell your first name (prénom) in French.
Homework: Practise the Q&A, alphabet and counting 0-20. 
Extension Task- practise spelling your first name in French.

Week 2. Tuesday 19th September.
Revisit the basic conversations, including spelling your first name in French.
Introduce sports and other activities.
Introduce 'J'aime'/ 'je n'aime pas' and 'je déteste'. Talk about sports and activities that we like and dislike.
Grammar point: Jouer, aimer and détester are all regular -er verbs. Brief look at how they work.
Position on ‘ne…pas’ around the verb to form the negative.
Review numbers 0-20 and introduce numbers 21-30.
Homework: Practise the Q&A, counting 0-30 and sports vocabulary. Write sentences using ‘je’.
Extension Task: comment on 2 sports you like, 1 sport you don't like. 

Week 3. Tuesday 26th September.
Revisit last week's conversations.
Introduce food and drink vocabulary and how to ask for food and drink in a café or restaurant.
Introduce the ‘vous’ form, which is used for adults you don’t know and for 2 or more people. ‘Vous avez….’
Role play in groups, ordering food and drink.
Grammar point: all nouns in French have a gender. It is important to learn un/une or le/la with each noun your learn. You can colour code them if it makes it easier.
Counting 0-30 consolidation. 
Homework: Practise the basic Q&A, numbers 0-30 and ordering food and drinks vocabulary. 
Extension Task - find a typical French food or drink that we haven't done in class and be able to order it and tell the class what is it in class next lesson.
Find 3 drinks and 3 snacks/types of food that you can order in France. Check the gender and write the order in French on  the worksheet provided: 'Je voudrais un Orangina/un sandwich'. Be able to order these items in class next week. in class next week.
Practical task - make 'un citron pressé', drink it and write a short review.

Week 4. Tuesday 3rd October.
Review weeks 1-3 conversations.
J'aime/je n'aime pas/je déteste with sports and the name of food and dinks we have learned so far.
Tell the class about the extra French food or drink you found out about. Order the food and drinks you did on the homework sheet. 
Compare reviews of citron pressé drinks.
Counting 0-30. Play Loto and other number games. 
Spell you name.
Introduce this week's Extension Task - prepare and write down/record a conversation between you and your made-up Alter Ego. You will need to find a French name, a French town or city that your Alter Ego lives in, make up an age, brothers and sisters, pets, a sport s/he likes and dislikes, food he likes and dislikes and spell his/her name. Aim to make your Alter Ego different from you.
Discussion about this Cycle’s Topic. Suggested Topic – an extended conversation between yourself and your Alter Ego?
Homework: Extension Task as detailed above. Written worksheet will be provided for scaffolding.

Week 5. Tuesday 10th October.
Have a conversation between you and you Alter Ego. Other students can ask questions when you are finished.
Counting 0 - 30.
'Au marche' - introduce fruit and vegetable vocabulary and the weights or quantities you would ask for in the market in France.
Role plays - ask for one type of fruit and and one type of vegetable in a French market.
Homework: Revise the fruit and vegetable vocabulary and prepare a written conversation for your Alter Ego at the market. S/He will buy different things than you did in class! 
(A written worksheet will be provided for scaffolding).
Revise the French alphabet, as we will be playing Pendu (hangman in French) next lesson.
Extension Task - find a French word that we did in class today and keep it ready for next week's class when we will play Pendu (hangman in French).

Week 6. Tuesday 17th October.
Students will present their ‘au marché’ conversations as their Alter Ego.
Homework – Work on your Project. Write a description for you Alter Ego. 

Week 7. Tuesday 24th October.
How to tell the time in French, including an introduction to the 24-hour clock. 
Counting 0-50. 
Which celebrations are like yours and which are different?
Homework: Continue working on your Project.
Revise counting 0-50

Week 8. Tuesday 31st October.
Learn the days of the week, months of the year and counting 0-30 plus 30-40.
Celebrations in France throughout the year. Which ones are the same/similar to those in your country? Which ones are different.
Days of the week and months of the year. Seasons of the year.
Revise howto say things you like and dislike.
Homework – continue working on your Project.
Revise counting 0-60.

Week 9.  Tuesday 7th November.
1:1 session with the students to do the Basic Conversations that we have learned in class. Other students may work on their Projects whilst they are in the waiting Room.
Come together and revise days of the week, months of the year and counting 0-60.
Homework – complete projects.

Week 10. Tuesday 14th November.
End of Cycle.
Students present their Projects.
We will play games such as Loto and Pendu is there is time.

Cycle 2.
Le monde francophone. Which countries around the world have French as their official language?
Students’ Projects will focus on one francophone country of their choice.
Colours.
Clothes, including conversations in a clothes shop.

Grammar points – regular verbs in present tense.
Introduce avoir, être and aller in the present tense, the passé composé and immediate future.
