In this, the first of four sessions, students will build on their existing knowledge of basic math skills.  Each class will last eight weeks with a break in between.  The same math workbook, Jumbo Math Success Workbook for Fourth Grade by Sylvan Learning,  will be used for all four sessions.
Classes will include the use of whiteboards, manipulatives, games, puzzles, and real life application of learned skills.  We will also use Mrs. Candice's very own multiplication facts mastery program called "Just Bead It" where students will tackle one set of multiplication facts each week as shown below and will engage in a variety of activities and games that will foster mastery of each level of facts.  Quizzes will be given each Friday and students can earn a letter bead on a necklace for each level they master.  

The curriculum will be as follows, but is subject to change based on student mastery of content.

Week 1:  Place Value to the Millions  and Times 2s
Week 2:  Comparing Numbers to the Millions (<,>,=)  and Times 3s
Week 3:  Rounding and Estimating Numbers  and Times 4s
Week 4:  Adding 5-Digit Numbers and Times 5s
Week 5:  Subtracting 5-Digit Numbers and Times 6s
Week 6:  Estimating Sums and Differences and Times 7s
Week 7:  Multiplication Facts Review
Week 8:  Multidigit Multiplication

Metas de aprendizaje

Students will explore a variety of strategies and models, including traditional algorithms, to address each curriculum topic.  They will be encouraged to think of each topic in a variety of ways to broaden comprehension and understanding.  They will improve their mastery of each topic and understand how they build on and relate to each other.

We will use whiteboard.com in class which allows Mrs. Candice to see each student's whiteboard without the students being able to see each other's boards, except on occasion when the teacher may share a student's board if so doing will foster understanding of content for other students. (Kids can sometimes explain things to each other in ways they understand better!) No data is collected by whiteboard.com and no account is needed. Students will simply click on a link provided by Mrs. Candice during class. No information is retained by whiteboard.com. A parental permission form for the use of whiteboard.com will be provided the first day of class.
