Experiencia de clase

This class is structured according to the 5 e model of lesson planning:

2-5 minutes: Introduction to the class, student expectations, and each other.
7-10 minutes: Engage - History of hair analysis group discussion
5-7 minutes: Explore - Lecture and discussion of the parts and structure of hair
15 - 20 minutes: Explain - Student groups will examine hair samples related to a fictional crime, record their observations and determine if any of the suspects’ hair matches the hair found at the crime-scene.
3-5 minutes: Extend - In each of my Forensic Science Series classes, we will have a short section titled "Careers in Forensics" in which we will examine a real-world career related to the forensic science topic we are exploring. This class highlights William Walsh, chemical researcher.
10-15 minutes: Evaluate - Student will complete a competitive, game-style quiz to review and assess their learning.

This model allows for frequent assessment and student interaction. Each lesson will include some form of lecture instruction using slides, images and/or video clips; and a variety of short, formative assessments such as multiple-choice questions, discussion, collaboration boards, matching games, drawing, writing activities, and interactive virtual lab skills activities.

This course will be taught using Nearpod lessons, which allows for the interaction mentioned above. If your student will be using a tablet or phone, they will need to download the free Nearpod app, which can be found in the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store. I will be posting a link to the Nearpod website and a code into the chat box when class starts and students using a computer will be able to access the lesson via the link or by going to the Nearpod website and entering in the code.
Metas de aprendizaje
By the end of this class students will be able to:
Identify the various parts of a hair
Describe the structure of the medulla, cortex and cuticle

Welcome!

I'm Amy Davis (she/her) and I've been teaching on Outschool since 2020. My primary focus is on semester long high school science classes. My teaching style is to try to create a positive, low-stress environment with plenty of opportunity for student interaction without forcing or making anyone uncomfortable. I use Nearpod for interactive lessons and I provide a Google Slides digital notebook to all students, which includes handouts for each weekly lesson, and places for students to keep track of grades, notes, and resources.
I recognize that different families have different ways of keeping (or not keeping) grades, as well as different local regulations about classes and grades, so all graded quizzes and exams outside of class are completely optional.

A Little Background About Me:
I have a bachelor's of science degree in chemistry with a minor in mathematics, and a master's of science degree in secondary education with a minor in chemistry. I also currently teach adult education classes at my local community college. I have been a certified 8-12 science teacher in Texas since 2012, spending 5 years teaching in public school, 3 years teaching at a homeschool co-op and rest of the time teaching online and at the community college. I have taught chemistry, biology, earth science, life science, forensic science, integrated physics and chemistry in grades 8-12.

I enjoy hanging out with and homeschooling my two teenagers, spending time outside in my native plant wildlife garden, trying all kinds of new things, and relaxing with my three dogs.

If you have any further questions, please send me a message. I would love to hear from you.
