This course is aimed at any young person considering a career as a pilot. Using STEM based subjects this 16-week program looks at the various elements needed to become a private or commercial pilot. It explains why Maths, Physics and English are essential subjects for a would be pilot and gives the student a taste of the workload encountered before, during and after a flight. Using flight simulation scenarios in a typical real-world training aircraft (a Cessna 172) the course shows how these subjects are relevant to flying and the skills and knowledge required by the pilot to control a modern aircraft. By exploring subjects such as wing structure, the principles of lift and drag, centre of gravity, weight and atmospheric variations, together with other related aviation matters, the goal is to encourage students to excel in school to achieve their ambitions to become a pilot. The videos will contain the information required to give students a good understanding of each topic, and each one will include homework for the students to undertake during the week. Homework assignments will include writing a list of topics, interests, and areas of expertise in which the students might be interested in developing.
Metas de aprendizaje
Develop a strong understanding of how core STEM subjects, particularly Maths and Physics, are applied in aviation, including concepts such as lift, drag, and center of gravity.
Gain practical knowledge and experience in flight simulation, using a Cessna 172, to understand the real-world application of theoretical principles in piloting.

más de 16 semanasLección 1:
How Planes Fly
Detailed explanation of the four forces of flight: lift, weight, thrust, and drag. Understanding wing structure and aerodynamics. The role of ailerons, elevators, rudder, and flaps. Flight control surfaces and their functions.
Lección 2:
Inside the Cockpit
Familiarization with the cockpit layout of a Cessna 172. Introduction to the flight instruments: airspeed indicator, altimeter, attitude indicator, heading indicator, vertical speed indicator, and turn coordinator. Understanding the basic controls: yoke, throttle, pedals.
Lección 3:
Pre-Flight Procedures
Importance of pre-flight checks. Detailed pre-flight inspection of documentation for a Cessna 172. Fuel system checks and calculations, oil level, safety protocols and emergency equipment.
Lección 4:
Start up, Taxi and Take Off
Students will be introduced to the procedures for taxiing and taking off in a Cessna 172. This includes understanding terminology, selecting take off runway, reading the windsock and using the throttle and rudder pedals to manoeuvre the aircraft on the ground; in addition to conducting final checks before take-off.
