This course is a beginning workshop in narrative film production. We will explore the fundamentals of production through lecture and active learning opportunities. Each week students will be asked to demonstrate the skills they learn through asynchronous lectures, demonstrations, and readings. We will cover story structure, camera and lenses, composition, lighting, cinematography, sound recording, directing, and cinematic genre. Students will produce several films with an emphasis on visual storytelling and developing their own style. Week 1: Understanding light Week 2: The Language of Cinema Week 3: Story Week 4: Cinematography Week 5: Sound in storytelling Week 6: The Visual Elements Week 7: Color Week 8: Genre Week 9: Movement Week 10: Feeling Each week class discussions will be offered as well as a space to share and comment on work done. Feedback will be offered on all activities. I will lead students through all activities and tasks using guided Hyperdocs and recorded videos. I'll be offering synchronous Office Hours to address any questions the students may have as well as posting a Weekly Questions discussion board. Video production requires that we stick to our deadlines. Often in production it is more important to complete the project and move forward than it is to attempt perfection. In a production workshop putting forth a strong effort and completing the work is most important for growth and learning. Firearms and other props: Please be aware no firearms or other weapons should be used in projects for this course. Film and video production shoots can be dangerous. Work safely in all situations and always think before you act. Please do not place yourself or others in harmful situations in an effort to get a “cool shot.” Photo by Clem Onojeghuo from Pexels
