How do we spark the love of reading and reading comprehension skills!?! We do this by providing CHOICE! Have you been looking for a fun novel study that provides structure, choice, and instruction on literary elements? Check out this flex class that provides engaging weekly lessons that can be completed with ANY novel! This will also allow students to see other novel's that students have selected and spark their interest to possibly read in the future! In this 8 week FLEX Novel Study students will develop a plan on how to complete their selected book in the time from given, complete a reading log weekly, select new vocabulary from the text, learn literary elements ( setting, plot, characterization, conflict, resolution, & theme) through weekly self-paced lessons, & engage in weekly discussions/questions to check on their reading comprehension! This class is a great way for students to use their personal reading choice, learn important skills, and demonstrate their comprehension skills & knowledge. During this flexible course students will work on developing the following skills: Reading, vocabulary, critical thinking, and language skills. These learning goals will be met through independent reading assignments, exercises, and asynchronous class discussion to analyze the book. How this flex course works: There are NO LIVE MEETINGS. This course will follow a flexible schedule. Students will be able to work on the assignments on the students schedule. All reading should be done prior to answering the weekly discussion questions, watching lessons posted, and completing assignments given for that week. Mondays: The teacher will upload the reading assignment, literary element lesson & assignment, and weekly discussion. Discussion questions and applicable assignments will be posted in the Outschool classroom. Students will receive a link in the classroom for the literary element lesson & assignment. Each week this lesson will be delivered through interactive Kahoot presentation. Students will use the Outschool classroom to interact with each other and the teacher through the guided discussion and the sharing of assignments. Learners may respond via written comment or upload a video or audio response. The guided discussion will be moderated by the teacher. Please note that due to students being in different time zones that some discussion questions may span a few days to allow time for all students to participate. Student interaction will vary based on the number of students enrolled. I can be reached via Outschool email. Week 1: Develop a Plan & Begin Reading! Select a book and develop a plan on how you will complete this novel selected in 8 weeks. There will be a reading log with step by step directions helping students develop this plan. Students will be required to submit their plan in a weekly discussion and keep track of pages read on the weekly reading log uploaded in the classroom. Students are then to begin reading their novel selected! Each week students will keep track of events happening in their book through a graphic organizer (uploaded in classroom) and they are to write down & look up the definition for 1-3 new words discovered in the text.
