This is an intro-to-feminism course for younger kids. We use the Frozen movies to understand some of the main ideas of feminism.* We will first introduce feminism as a word that means "believing that everyone of every gender has equal value" and that the feminist movement believes in finding places where things are unfair and trying to fix them. 1) Do the women and girls in Frozen get to make their own decisions, or are their decisions made for them by other people and circumstances? (This is the feminist idea of agency.) 2) Do the characters in the movie have to follow rules about how boys and girls are "supposed to" behave? (This is the feminist idea of avoiding rigid gender roles.) 3) Do these movies provide a positive example for children? *Note for parents: our view of feminism comes from an intersectional perspective. In classes for older kids, we discuss aspects of intersectionality in this class, including race, gender identity, and sexual orientation. However, in this younger class, the focus will be on gender.
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will learn several aspects of feminist theory, appropriate to the age range (7-10) and apply those theories to the popular movies.
Otros detalles
Orientación para padres
The feminist theories of this class are based on intersectional feminism, which argues that gender/gender identity, sexual orientation, race, nationality, language, socioeconomic class, and physical ability are all factors in power and privilege. That said, this class for younger children will focus primarily on gender and gender roles.
