Each week, students will meet with me, the teacher, at the weekly meeting time. Students will prepare for the meetings by completing assigned readings, journal activities, and other optional content (all optional content will be marked with the initials OPT). While optional, this content will assist students in their contextual and background knowledge of the story and will give them opportunities to bring other facts and ideas into the conversation. Week 1Lesson 1Introduction to J.R.R. Tolkien and "The Hobbit"You will learn about the Author, J.R.R. Tolkien, and you will be introduced to the story through the Map and a lesson on Dwarvish runes.Lesson 2Quests and Quest StoriesA discussion of Chapters 1 and 2, and a mini lesson on Joseph Campbell's Hero's Cycle.Lesson 3Invented LanguagesThis lesson is about Tolkien's fascination with developing new languages for his stories, and you'll have the chance to make your own!Lesson 4Animals in FantasyA discussion of stories and traditions with animals, as we are introduced to a fascinating new character!Week 2Lesson 5Forests in MythologyA discussion of stories and traditions that take place in deep, dark forests, plus some information on Tolkien's ideas and thoughts surrounding trees and deforestation.Lesson 6Dragons!Dragons in mythology, Norse, and English traditions.Lesson 7What Makes a Good Leader?An exercise in character analysis as we compare three leaders in the story and their qualities.Lesson 8Final Class Celebration!A day of merriment as we share our final creative projects, finish the story, and discuss the "there and back again" of Bilbo's journey.
- Students will be able to... 1. Describe how a story's plot unfolds in a series of episodes and how the characters respond or change as the plot moves toward a resolution, 2. Pose and respond to specific questions with elaboration and detail, 3. Make comments that contribute to the topic, text, or issue under discussion. Students will be able to use the reading skills and strategies taught in this club in their schoolwork. Students will also use their discussion skills and strategies to talk in-depth about their books, pose and answer questions, and lead discussions independently.

Frecuencia: incluidoComentario: incluidoDetalles: Students will be required to read up to three assigned chapters (approximately 40 pages, depending on the edition). They will have an entire week to complete the reading. Students will be required to write in a weekly journal. This journal can either be in a paper format or an online/digital format. They may choose one out of three possible questions to answer in their journals. These responses should follow a specific format as posted on the classroom page. At the end of the course, students will have the opportunity to present a creative project of their choice (along with a tea party!).Evaluación
Frecuencia: incluidoDetalles: While no formal grades will be used to assess students, each assignment will have a set of standards for students to reach in order to have a successful book club meeting. These standards will help students hone and improve their reading, speaking, and writing skills as practice for their formal schooling.

Journal (paper or digital) 2. Writing materials 3. Book: "The Hobbit" -This text can be purchased online in a paper or eBook form. Students are also encouraged to borrow from their local library. --Note: If your local library is closed or does not have a physical copy of the text, you can also borrow an eBook version on Libby (https://www.overdrive.com/apps/libby/). 4. Access to Audible or YouTube for audio options is recommended but not required. 5. Available creative materials for the end-of-club project.
