-----

The incredible and pristine Galapagos Islands are without a doubt, one of the most amazing places in the world. Having traveled there myself, I can attest to this! In this FLEX class, learners will learn about much of the wildlife that call the Galapagos Islands home – some of which can’t be found anywhere else in the world.

Some of the wildlife we’ll learn about include:

1) Blue Footed Boobies
2) Scalloped Hammerhead Sharks
3) Marine Iguanas
4) Galapagos Tortoises
5) Sally Lightfoot Crabs

**Please note: there are NO live lessons for this class.

The schedule for this class includes the following topics:

Week One: Introduction to the Galapagos Islands and Three Reptiles of the Galapagos
Week Two: Darwin and Natural Selection and Three Aquatic/Semi-Aquatic animals of the Galapagos
Week Three: Ecosystems on the Galapagos Islands and Four Birds of the Galapagos
Week Four: Biology: What affects ecosystems? What are threats to the Galapagos Islands? Conservation

We will be working both independently and in a group setting. This is the best part about FLEX classes! Each Sunday afternoon (EST time), a pre-recorded video (touching on the basics of the scheduled topics) will be posted for students to watch. In addition, supplemental videos, optional homework assignments, tasks, fun activities, and discussion questions will be posted. Students are encouraged to complete the assignments and tasks to get the most out of the course.

**Please note that both the pre-recorded videos and the supplementary videos will be via YouTube

Throughout the course, online discussions will be prompted in the Outschool classroom. This will allow students to discuss ideas, concepts, and questions with their peers from around the world. In addition, I will be monitoring the classroom and supplying guidance throughout. I will be encouraging participation in the online discussions as much as possible but it is also a responsibility of the student to try and check in at least once a week.

How is this course interactive?
1) Discussions: Students are encouraged to participate in the discussions to get to know fellow students from around the world! The more active students are in discussions, the more we can build a sense of community.
2) Quizzes: Students will have the option of completing fun quizzes via an external website (Kahoot) each week. No registration or account necessary!
3) Fun Activities: There will be fun activities each week where students can complete and post their results in the classroom. Sharing with each other will be a great way for students to interact and see creativity within the class.
4) Supplementary Videos: I will be posting supplementary videos in the class to coincide with the pre-recorded video. This will allow students to have more visual understanding of concepts discussed.

My goal is to make learning fun, exciting, and efficient. As such, you can expect responses to emails or inquiries within 24 hours (though usually much quicker).

If you have any questions at all, feel free to reach out!

Metas de aprendizaje

By the end of the four classes, students would have learned the basics about the following:
1) Wildlife - 10 different animals that can be found on The Galapagos Islands (some of which are solely found in this area). We will learn what they eat, behaviours, and fascinating facts of these creatures.
2) Darwin - We will touch on Darwin's voyage around these islands and his findings in evolution and natural selection
3) Ecosystems - We will discuss the different ecosystems found on these islands and how they differ
4) Adaptations - Tying into Darwin's discoveries, we will discuss what adaptations are and some examples. Students will apply their knowledge of this to the animals that we learn about in this course and beyond.
5) Threats - We will have conversations about what threats The Galapagos Islands are facing and what people are doing to help conserve this amazing place.

Orientación para padres
During the second class, we touch briefly on Charles Darwin and his theory of Natural Selection. Since this goes hand in hand with his other theories and discoveries, Evolution will be briefly mentioned as well (though not discussed in depth)
