Optional handouts and questions to promote information retention will be provided for each class. In addition, an optional task will be presented. Learners who choose to do this will get an outline regarding the task as well as feedback upon completion. A snapshot of the task is the creation of a writing piece (one or more paragraphs) or a poster about their favourite learned species.

The incredible and pristine Galapagos Islands are without a doubt, one of the most amazing places in the world. Having traveled there myself, I can attest to this! In this multi-day class, learners will learn about much of the wildlife that call the Galapagos Islands home – some of which can’t be found anywhere else in the world.

Some of the wildlife we’ll learn about include:

1) Blue Footed Boobies
2) Scalloped Hammerhead Sharks
3) Marine Iguanas
4) Galapagos Tortoises
5) Sally Lightfoot Crabs

In addition, we will touch on Darwin’s voyage around these islands including his research and findings with evolution and natural selection.

Classes At-A-Glance:

Class One
-Introduction to the Galapagos Islands
-Three Reptiles of the Galapagos Islands

Class Two
-Darwin and Natural Selection
-Three Aquatic/Semi-Aquatic Animals

Class Three
-Ecosystems on the Galapagos
-Four Birds of the Galapagos Islands

Class Four
-What affects ecosystems?
-What people are doing to help the Galapagos Islands
-Student presentations (optional)

There is no mandatory homework, but students are encouraged to write about their favourite learned species in the form of a paragraph or poster. If learners decide to do this option, I will provide an outline for the task and would be happy to look at the finished product and assess it if the parent (or learner) would like.

Optional handouts and follow up questions to promote information retention will also be provided for each class.

This class will be more of a lecture style (yet interactive) class with a PowerPoint, photos, videos, and fascinating facts. We will have conversations about these creatures (including where they live, what they eat, and different behaviours) and students are encouraged to ask questions and discuss (although are also welcome to just absorb the information if they prefer).

Having been to the islands, I will be providing a lot of my own videos, photos, and stories!

Metas de aprendizaje
By the end of the four classes, students would have learned the basics about the following:
1) Wildlife - 10 different animals that can be found on The Galapagos Islands (some of which are solely found in this area). We will learn what they eat, behaviours, and fascinating facts of these creatures.
2) Darwin - We will touch on Darwin's voyage around these islands and his findings in evolution and natural selection
3) Ecosystems - We will discuss the different ecosystems found on these islands and how they differ
4) Adaptations - Tying into Darwin's discoveries, we will discuss what adaptations are and some examples. Students will apply their knowledge of this to the animals that we learn about in this course and beyond.
5) Threats - We will have conversations about what threats The Galapagos Islands are facing and what people are doing to help conserve this amazing place.

Orientación para padres
During the second class, we touch briefly on Charles Darwin and his theory of Natural Selection. Since this goes hand in hand with his other theories and discoveries, Evolution will be briefly mentioned as well (though not discussed in depth)
