Grades will be offered only to the extent that students get a true picture of how they are doing with their learning. The grading system will be as follows: A - Excellent B - Very Good C - Needs a little more work Students who receive a "C" will have an opportunity to improve the grade. The class will meet three times a week. Each class will build on the previous class. The class will be structured using the "I Do...We Do... You Do" format, where I teach the lesson showing examples. We do examples together, and then the students practice on their own to show comprehension. My teaching style is one where I am actively involved. As the students are working, I am monitoring their work to offer suggestions or ideas for improvement. Students will interact with me and their peers by sharing their writings, if they choose, and identifying the major parts of the essay. Students will learn the conventions of Standard English and how to effectively incorporate them into their writing. Students will also learn how to clearly and adequately express their ideas by using many elaborative techniques such as examples and quotations, among others. Finally, students will be able to write an organized, coherent informative/expository and persuasive essay, consistently focused on purpose and audience, while demonstrating appropriate vocabulary, sentence variation, and supporting details. English Language Arts and Writing Course 8 Weeks Curriculum Week 1: Grammar Parts of Speech: nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions. Clauses: independent and subordinate clauses. Week 2: Grammar Subject/Verb Agreement, Capitalization, End Marks, Commas, and Semicolons. Week 3: Sentences and Paragraphs Fragments, Run-ons, Combining Sentences, Compound Subjects and Compound Verbs. Week 4: Sentences and Paragraphs Varying Sentence Structure Types of Sentences: Simple, Compound, Complex, Compound/Complex Week 5: Persuasive Essay Writing Claim, Counter-Claim, Rebuttal Introduction: Types of Beginnings - Question, Quote, Anecdote, Interesting Fact, Analogy. Body Paragraphs, Counter-Claim Paragraph. Topic Sentence, Transitional Words, Support Practice writing introductions with different types of beginnings. Practice writing supporting body paragraph. Practice writing counter-claim/rebuttal paragraph. Conclusion: Claim and Topic Sentences Week 6: Persuasive Essay Writing Write persuasive essay with required parts. Week 7: Informative/Expository Essay Writing Thesis Statement, Topic Sentences Introduction: Types of Beginnings - Question, Quote, Anecdote, Interesting Fact, Analogy. Body Paragraphs: Topic Sentence, Transitional Words, Support. Conclusion: Thesis Statement and Topic Sentences. Week 8: Informative/Expository Essay Writing Write informative/expository essay with required parts.

My professional background consists of a Doctorate of Education degree, with a focus on School Management and Instructional Leadership; a Master of Science degree, with a major in English, and a Bachelor of Arts degree, with a major in English. I hold the State of Florida Department of Education Professional Teaching Certificates in: English, Reading, English for Speakers of Other Languages, and Middle Grades. My educational background and my teaching experiences have given me opportunities to teach at various levels: middle school, high school, community college, and university.
My experience also includes being a Literacy Coach for High School. At all of these levels I taught English Language Arts, Writing, and Reading. As the Literacy Coach, I trained teachers while modeling and coaching them on small group instructional strategies that hold students’ interest and improve learning. I also worked with teachers coaching, supporting, and providing learning strategies to improve students’ success through classroom instruction.
