Welcome to English by the Books! The scope of this intensive language arts course covers literary analysis, grammar, beginner sentence diagramming, and formal writing practice over a 12 week semester. Students will experience a familiar and supportive group setting as we learn how to read deeply, think critically, and write confidently with the use of living books! Additionally, teacher editing support is provided for one rough draft per week with additional written feedback. Each week, we'll make the story come alive as we discuss the character development and plot of our current novel while further delving into all of the subject matter that enriches the story in a socratic style novel discussion. Next, we'll dive deeper into the reading by studying the author's use of English grammar. Students will further interact with the grammar by practicing basic sentence diagramming. Finally, students will gain formal writing skills including key word outlines and stylistic techniques. By the end of the course, students will have completed their own summaries, formal essays, and literary critiques with the weekly steps we work through in class. Please see the itinerary below for further details. *Note: Both the grammar and writing portions of this class pick up where the semester 1 class ended. Students will review semester 1 concepts throughout the course while being introduced to more advanced application of the grammar and sentence diagramming. Completion of the semester 1 class is required to enroll unless approved by the instructor. Please message me with any questions. The book selection for this course includes: 1. Content Warning: Please be aware that there are depictions of battle and violence, sea monsters and dragons, menacing mythical creatures, death, and sorcery across the various books in this course. In "The Apothecary", there is a brief and innocent first kiss scene between the two main characters and a quick mention of a neighbor being drunk which is why a main character was able to escape unnoticed. Furthermore, the Shakespeare comedies include themes of love and deception. However, the book we read, "Shakespeare Stories", covers these themes in an age appropriate manner. If you have concerns for your reader, please preview these books and feel free to contact me with questions. In accordance with Outschool policy, all classroom discussion and teaching will be presented from a secular perspective.
External Sources: On occasion, this class uses Blooket.com to play review games created by the teacher. No account sign up is necessary. Games are shared on the Zoom screen while students are given a link to play the game live with the teacher and classmates.

I believe great writers read great books. My passion is to teach beginner writers how to find their written voice and appreciation of the written word. I have been teaching formal writing methods in our homeschool and in co-ops for the past five years.
Books are my love language. I want your student to know the joy of reading deeply. I want your student to examine, question, and think critically about what they read. I want your student to know they can write confidently and understand that their words have meaning in this world. This is why I teach.
