You will experience the stories of immigrants, you'll hear the stories of immigrants traveling on steamships to Ellis Island. You'll hear the stories of modern day refugees who are processed overseas and fly here on commercial flights. Students will hear the stories of immigrants in their own words. They’ll hear from Annie Moore, the 17-year old girl from Cork, Ireland who was the first person to be processed by US immigration at Ellis Island. They’ll hear from Joseph Rufino, who as a boy walked hundreds of miles from Sudan to Kenya to escape a civil war, and who later comes the US as a refugee.

The class will be an interactive lecture, with student participation and discussion encouraged. No prior experience or knowledge needed.
