We will use the "Wunderkeys Elementary 2A" piano method book to explore playing in G, G minor, D, D minor, A, and A minor. The songs in this book are more complex and full than previous Wunderkeys books! We will be practicing technical exercises, sight reading, rhythm work, duets, and improvisation. In order to participate in this class students need to be able to read music in the treble and bass clefs and play songs in C position, Treble C position, and possibly G position. I love using Wunderkeys because it focuses on note reading and creativity! Students are encouraged to improvise and compose their own songs, along with learning theory and technique. Each class will consist of: - learning or reviewing a new key and practicing the 5 finger scale - discussing the sharps in each key - a sight reading exercise -a note reading exercise - introducing a new song that incorporates the note and technique learned above Subsequent classes will continue learning with scale practice, a scale solo, a rhythm exercise, improvisation, and another song. Depending on time it could take 3-4 weeks to complete a unit. Here is the schedule of learning: December 1 - review G major, discuss the key signature, complete the sight reading exercise, practice the note reading exercises. Introduce "Zig Zag" and assign it for homework. December 8- perform "Zig Zag", practice the scales and scale solo, introduce dotted quarter notes and complete the rhythm work page. If time permits, introduce "Dandelion Wish" and talk about improvisation. December 15 - perform "Dandelion Wish", review the lower G position and practice the sight reading page. Complete the technical exercises and emphasize legato and staccato, assign "Rise N Shine" for practice. January 5- perform "Rise N Shine", learn about crescendo and diminuendo signs, introduce "Enchanted" and spend the rest of the class looking for scale/chord patterns in the song and practicing it. January 12- perform "Enchanted", talk about dynamics if needed. Introduce G minor and talk about the key signature along with how to create a minor scale/chord. Complete the practice exercises and introduce the "Timberwolf" duet for practice. January 19 - have students perform Timberwolf if possible, practice the duet together. Introduce D major and discuss the key signature and 5 finger scale. Practice the sight reading exercise, note reading exercises, and introduce "Fireflies" for practice. January 26 - Perform "Fireflies", work on the scale practice and solo, practice the rhythm exercise with eighth notes. and talk about left hand patterns. Assign "Foggy London". February 2 - Perform "Foggy London", introduce pedaling technique and practice it. Learn the treble D 5 finger scale and do the technical exercises. If time permits, introduce "Distant Star" for practice. February 9 - review "Distant Star" and work on problem areas. Add dynamics and articulation. If time permits, talk about the differences between D major and D minor. Continue to work on "Distant Star" for homework. February 16 - perform "Distant Star", work on the practice page for D major and D minor. Introduce the "Urban Legend" duet and practice. This schedule is approximate and can be adjusted accordingly. A second Elementary 2A class will be offered to complete the book.

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
Hello! My name is Julie Schmidt and I have 16 years of experience teaching individual and group piano lessons. Also, I have been playing and studying the piano for 35 years while earning a MS in Education. Music is definitely my passion. My favorite part of teaching the piano is finding out what kind of music motivates my students. Some of my students like reading the notes on the staff, playing classical music, and not straying far from the printed notes. Other students play more by ear and love to improvise! I always have a few students who want to be able to play songs quickly - I teach them chords and leadsheets so they can progress faster. I like to tailor my lessons to get a student excited about playing the piano. I use a variety of books, digital music, and resources to keep my lessons new and motivate my students to practice.
I have a laid-back teaching style and love to have fun during lessons. We will play games, improvise, compose, learn chords, and study different musical periods and composers. I really enjoy it when students bring their own music to lessons because I know that they are motivated to learn it!
Along with piano I have also earned a degree in Dietetics, owned a baking business, homeschooled my 3 children for a few years, taught in the public school, and taught Sunday School to middle schoolers. Luckily I did not do all of these things at the same time! I love reading, baking, line dancing, and attending concerts.
