Experiencia de clase

This is a "Hands On" science class that continues the "What is Electricity" series. In this class the students will use their own voltmeter to learn how to measure electricity. The class is split into three sessions, each focusing on a major aspect of measuring electricity.

Session 1: Measuring Voltage
Explore the basics of a voltmeter
Explain the three main aspects of electricity: Volts, Amps, Ohms
Practice measuring battery to see how much life is left in them
Explore voltage dropping as batteries die
Explain Series vs Parallel for voltage

Session 2: Measuring Amperage
Review the Basics of the voltmeter
Explain safety rules of measuring amperage
Build a test set of conductive water and battery
Explore measuring amperage as salt (conductivity) level increases
Explain Series vs Parallel for amperage

Session 3: Measuring Resistance
Review the basics of the voltmeter
   Explain the concept of resistance
Build a "homemade" resistor from pencil lead and paper
Practice measuring resistance across the homemade resistor
Explain series vs Parallel for resistance

This is a very hands-on class offering the opportunity for students to perform the experiments themselves and gain skills with electronic tools. High emphasis is placed on safety rules. The experiments are very simple and possible for most young children to perform with minimal adult supervision.

To participate hands-on, you must purchase the materials before class. This is available for purchase from the link below or you can bring your own.

Orientación para padres
Parents: The experiments in this set of classes are fairly easy for young children, however, please gauge whether it is appropriate for an adult to be present in case the child has difficulty. Sometimes in the group setting, an individual child can feel overwhelmed with simple problems and miss out on a successful experience. I leave it to you as parent to gauge the child's capability to complete the experiments successfully.

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
Electricity has been a big party of my life. As a teenager I was building computer circuits, robots, and discrete electric devices. I worked after school in my Dad's radio shack store repairing everything from radios to toasters to TV's. Through the decades I held on and developed this understanding through hands on experience as well as formal courses.

Perhaps more importantly I have a skill for explaining complex concepts in a simple easy to understand manner and a passion for plain true practical understanding to the next generation. Learning should be deep and fun!
