The 4th/5th grade ELA curriculum integrates reading, writing, speaking, listening, and the study of vocabulary and grammar in a way that engages today's learners and supports them in building a broad and diverse set of literacy skills. Using a project-based learning approach allows students to apply their instruction in a fun and productive manner. This session will focus on learning about and creating superheroes while learning about the following language arts elements: ** Story Elements ** Themes ** Main Idea ** Words and Phrases ** Paraphrasing portions of text ** Grade Level phonics ** Informative/Explanatory Writing ** Editing and Publishing ** Punctuation for Effect By combining Nearpod with in-class activities, students will have a project-based approach to learning. As a former special education teacher, I am able to modify assignments and scaffold learning as needed. While handouts are available, they will be optional with the majority of the work being contained within Nearpod. At the end of the lesson, students may print the packet with their answers for review. I expect all learners to have their video on (see below). Students will be asked to read aloud either in the group or separately with the teacher. There may be opportunities to present one's work as well. I do accept learners older than the stated age range if it meets their academic potential. Alternative methods to respond, such as sentence starters, multiple choice, or guided work are available as needed.
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will work across ELA standards indicated for fourth/fifth grade (see http://www.corestandards.org/ for more information).
Students will be met where they are. I aim for progress and application rather than perfection.

Orientación para padres
I will be using carefully curated videos and resources within Nearpod. I will use Nearpod in the teacher-directed mode. Students may choose to create a free Nearpod account and have two windows open to participate in student activities. Or, students can watch through my shared screen and participate through annotation. Nearpod is an approved third-party educational tool. It is rated as excellent through Common Sense Education. You may see their review here: https://www.commonsense.org/education/app/nearpod.
Lista de útiles escolares
Students must have a dedicated notebook for this class. They should come prepared each day with their notebook, handouts, pencils, and colored pencils. Expect some handouts each week. If printing is an issue, we can use online PDF editors.
