In the course, The Raven, by Edgar Allan Poe, we will be getting into the headspace of Halloween! We will cover several topics related to reading and responding to literature, in this case, American Literature. We will have a discussion on the author and his place in the canon of American Literature, as well as his personal life and the controversies that surrounded him while he was living. I will also read the poem to the students and assign each a stanza for their own personal critical commentary and provide feedback to them after they speak to the class about their stanza. I will also show visual representations of the poem for another way to receive its messages. Students will write their own stanza that would fit well into the existing poem, which will act as their assessment for the class.
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will learn the messages of the poem, The Raven. They will also learn biographical information on the author, Edgar Allan Poe. They will learn what it means to call something "American Literature" as well as other works in that genre during the same time in our history. Students will learn how to read literature and respond to it, using context clues, historical author information as well as their own ideas. Students will also find their own unique voice in creating their own brief sample of literature to match the genre as well as the language of the poem.

Orientación para padres
Edgar Allan Poe's work is, sometimes, considered to be of the "horror" genre of literature. While The Raven is part of his catalogue of work, there are no direct references to horror, but parents should be aware of the reputation of this early American author.
Lista de útiles escolares
Students will only need their eyes and ears (and creativity) for the class. I have provided the PDF of the poem to our course for review. Students are welcome to read ahead of time, but it is not required.
