UU. 4 - 6
Does your child enjoy cooking and reading? This just may be the class for them! Each week, learners will read an assigned historical fiction chapter book. Each lesson will include a writing prompt. We will also make a recipe that would have been popular at the time. This is a hands-on, interactive class where learners will be having so much fun that they won't realize they are learning!

This is an asynchronous class. Video lessons are prerecorded, so learners can follow along with the recipes at their own pace and even pause or replay as needed.

Each lesson includes the following steps:
1. Read the assigned book.
2. Follow a video tutorial to cook the recipe.
3. Post a picture of the finished recipe.
4. Respond briefly to a writing prompt about the book (optional).

I will respond with feedback for each part of the lesson within 1-3 days of receiving the learner's work. I will give feedback on how their recipe turned out, and I will offer feedback about their writing and engage in a written discussion with them about their response to the writing prompt. I am also available to answer any questions the learner may have about any aspect of the class--the book, the history, the recipe, or their writing.

Lessons are designed to take about a week each, so learners will typically finish the entire course within eight weeks. Lesson posts, including videos, will be available for learners for a year.

No prior knowledge or experience is necessary, but learners should be able to read an average of about 120 pages per lesson. (Listening to audio books is fine, too.) You may obtain books from your local library or purchase online. If you have trouble finding a book, I have had a lot of success finding free ebook rentals through the Open Library website.

A written list of ingredients will be posted with each lesson, so your learner can prepare for the cooking tutorial before turning on the video.
Here is a list of books and recipes:
Lesson 1: "Meet Felicity" by Valerie Tripp/johnny cakes
Lesson 2: "Spy in the Sky" by Kathleen Karr/chicken wings fricassee
Lesson 3: "Elizabeth's Story" by Adele Whitby/coddled eggs

Lesson 5: "I Thought My Soul Would Rise and Fly: The Diary of Patsy, a Freed Girl" by Joyce Hansen/traditional Southern buttermilk biscuits

Lesson 8: "Anna Maria's Gift" by Janice Shefelman/thick Italian hot chocolate

Parental supervision in the kitchen is required. If your learner has any food allergies, please inform me, so I can help brainstorm substitutions.

Please understand that the books we read are historical fiction and may portray unpleasant events from the past. I will handle all issues with compassion and kindness and with an unbiased approach. I will also attempt to give an accurate account of the historical context of each book, but please understand that my teaching background is in English, not history. Also, while I try to choose books with a very young audience in mind, some children may be sensitive to certain topics. Please let me know if you have any questions about the content of any of the books.
