This is a one-time class for beginning violin or viola players. Students need to know how to tune their own violin (or have a parent help tune it before class), and how to play all the notes from the D major scale (starting on open D). No reading of written music notation is required in this class. The main activity of the class will consist of the teacher playing a small pattern and having the students 'echo' it back on their instrument. Patterns will start very simple and easy, and as we build our 'Ear + Brain' power, students will progress to imitating more complicated and surprising patterns. Class will alternate between all students playing (on mute, so our sounds don't mix) and brief individual portions where kids play one by one to check on their progress. We will talk about patterns that appear often in music, like bit of scales or or 'zigzags' between two notes. Towards the end of the class we'll use our skills to figure out and play the song '5 Little Monkeys'.
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will more accurately be able to listen to a small chunk of music and play it themselves 'by ear'.

The song '5 Little Monkeys' will be learned. If the tune is not already familiar to the students, the teacher may sing it to the learners: 5 Little Monkeys jumping on the bed, 1 fell off and bumped his head, mama called the doctor and the doctor said, no more monkeys jumping on the bed.
Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
Hello, My name is Mrs. VW.
I teach music and other classes on Outschool.
I have experience teaching orchestra, band, choir and general music in school classrooms and for private groups such as home school and fine arts organizations. I have over 15 years of experience teaching private instrument lessons, mainly string instruments and piano.
Our world is full of beauty and I love helping others tune in to notice, create and share beautiful things.
When I'm not teaching or creating music, I enjoy reading and learning new things!
Note:
If you are thinking of purchasing a string instrument in preparation for a class, you are welcome to message me about good quality but still affordable recommendations. Buying a too-cheap and poorly made 'violin shaped object' off Amazon or other sellers can result in frustrations with an instrument that breaks, is hard to tune, hard to play etc.
