Experiencia de clase

This class will be beneficial to beginning and more advanced students.

Each week students can take part in a meeting where the artist/teacher will complete a live demonstration of working (drawing and/or painting) in a sketchbook.
This is a unique opportunity to gain insight, watching as a professional artist practices different skills by filling sketchbook pages! Students are meant to complete their own sketchbook pages during meeting times, but they are more than welcome to just watch the teacher work, feeling free to ask any questions.
Students are free to draw or paint any subject they choose, the teacher will be drawing and painting a wide variety of subjects and styles!
This weekly club is meant to be a relaxing hour where students can work, ask questions, connect with other artists, and improve, and increase their joy of creating art.

Learners get to direct their own subject matter week to week, but the teacher will have different topics depending on the week. Since learners direct their own sketching subject matter, they are not required to sketch the same topic as the instructor.
For an example of some of the sketchbook subjects the teacher will be completing, please see below!
-Week 1: Travel sketching
-Week 2: Drawing a favorite area of my home
-Week 3: Sketching family members
-Week 4: Painting/drawing a favorite movie character

Sketchbooks are meant to give artists the freedom to practice and most importantly make mistakes without having to worry about others judging or disliking their work if it's not "good". Having this freedom to work without judgement is so important for all artists and I am excited to help students embrace this and improve!

A note on the art of keeping a sketchbook:

Working in sketchbooks is a time honored practice of artists, allowing them to work through artistic concepts, ideas, and problems. Viewing sketchbooks of artists, including sketchbooks of famous artists such as Leonardo Da Vinci, JMW Turner, John Singer Sargent and countless others give valuable and incredible insight to how different artists practiced and worked. Because sketchbooks are meant only for the artist and are not meant to be shown to the public (for sale, in galleries, or exhibitions etc) they are doubly interesting and insightful as a private view into their practice.

Hello, I'm Miriam. Thank you for your interest!
(Classes and interests)
I teach art, writing, reading, and science classes. I love helping my students find true interest in different subjects and one of my biggest goals for all my students is for them to have real satisfaction about their work and learning.

(Background)
I have a bachelors degree in interdisciplinary science and a minor in art, having a deep love of both subjects.
Veterinary technician (nurse), independent artist, private school teacher, intensive reading teacher and coach, and substitute teacher are some of the different jobs I've held. As a volunteer I've also enjoyed being able to work with several different wildlife animals. I also have a history of working with horses. I know my interests and professional background seems varied and eclectic, but I've found there is a common thread throughout all of it. Each job and experience has lessons that help me improve the others.

(Teaching values)
Every student is different, but every student (like every person) has a desire to do well, succeed, and to be accepted. I work to facilitate ways for each student to feel this acceptance and success.
I have spent so much of my life and continue to be a student, and there are things that I love and find easy when learning... and things that I hate and struggle with. So when it's my turn to teach, I remember my frustrations and feelings of failure to help my students have smoother journeys.

("Something fun and personal")
I'll just tell a favorite joke.
A photon checks into a hotel. The hotel manager says "Do you have any luggage?"
"No, I'm traveling light."
