In honor of indigenous peoples day we will read the story of 13 year old Alaskan student Benny Benson who designed the flag for Alaska. Young artists will draw an Alaska night sky to resemble the Northern Lights and the Big Dipper using chalk. We will compare our drawing of the Big Dipper to Benny’s Alaska flag design. They will learn a chalk blending technique. Through the use of storytelling, games and songs preschoolers will learn about blending colors. Instructor will demonstrate using age appropriate step by step instructions to show preschoolers how to create an Alaska night sky. They will gain confidence through drawing and coloring. All students will have an opportunity to share their artwork. Adults are encouraged to be close by in case preschoolers need assistance.

Originally from New Jersey, Mary Roche, moved to Baltimore in 2003 to attend the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). While at MICA Mary focused on her two passions, Sculpture and teaching students. For as long as she can remember art has been a huge part of her life. Since she studied at the Studio Art Center International in Florence in 2005 she has taken every opportunity to travel and use art from around the world to inspire her personal art and the lessons she teaches her students. She loves to work with children and watch them make discoveries through art. Whether in her own work or in her students', she strives to make personal connections with the real world to help relate to the artwork being created.
Mary graduated from MICA with a BFA in General Sculptural Studies. Then continued at MICA to earn a Masters in Art Teaching degree. She taught in Howard County Public Schools for 6 years with experiences in elementary and high school art programs. While living in Maryland, she worked with a homeschooling group to create custom curriculums and summer camps that were cross curricular with history. She has over 10 years experience teaching private art lessons.
Mary moved to Bucks County, PA in 2014, were she took on long term substitute art positions in the Central Bucks School District and taught art classes at the Whitemarsh Art Center and ArtMuse. While at ArtMuse she focused on teaching preschool and lower elementary age students, she also developed a child caregiver program for students ages 2 to 4. Making sure she shares her love of art while helping students gain self confidence is very important to Mary. She is looking forward to meeting students on Outlook.com and helping them to create meaningful artwork that makes them proud. Mary currently resides in York County, PA with her husband Kris and daughters Ella and Willow.
