Experiencia de clase

This class is part of a single-day class series for dinosaur enthusiasts who love to look at dinosaur fossils for clues and draw a dinosaur as paleoartists would.

While these were originally created especially for kids who took the Introduction classes (either the "One-Day Dinosaur Investigation & Drawing: Intro to Thinking Like a Paleoartist!" or the "Digging It: 4-Day Dinosaur Camp") and want to do more digging and more drawing, the intro classes are NOT required to enroll here. Individual Paleoartist classes can be taken in any order (they are numbered so you can keep track and not repeat the same dinosaur drawing if you enroll in more than one), and you can take just one or all four!

In each of the Paleoartist classes, we'll have a DIFFERENT mystery dinosaur fossil from around the world to discover and draw. We'll begin by reviewing the dinosaur skeleton features that give us key information about dinosaur stance, diet, and the type of dinosaur our mystery dino of the day might be related to. After that, we'll reveal the mystery dino of the day: its fossils and where and when it was found. Each learner will create a drawing showing what they think the dinosaur looked like and the type of habitat in which it lived. As in the Intro class and all others in this series, emphasis as we draw is on learners' best efforts, and the goal is having fun. As we present our drawings to the group, we'll talk about what evidence we used to support our own theories that the mystery dinosaur walked on two legs or four, ate meat or plants, and looked like other theropods, sauropods, ornithopods, or other types of dinosaurs! Finally, we'll reveal what the dinosaur species in question is and show professional paleoartists' depictions of it, as well.

If you are interested in more Dinosaur classes, the series includes the following:

1. "One-Day Dinosaur Investigation & Drawing: Intro to Thinking Like a Paleoartist!"OR "Digging It: 4-Day Dinosaur Camp" (both offer a good base of information about scientific questioning; the one-day class is offered more times, while the longer camp, offered more around school breaks, has more hands-on time and details).

2. These single-day classes in ANY order (each presents a new mystery species):
~ Dinosaur Investigation Series: Paleoartist 1 - European Dino
~ Dinosaur Investigation Series: Paleoartist 2 - North American Dino
~ Dinosaur Investigation Series: Paleoartist 3 - Asian Dino
~ Dinosaur Investigation Series: Paleoartist 4 - African Dino

Metas de aprendizaje

Students will investigate physical clues from fossils, analyze similarities and differences to known dinosaurs, and hypothesize what type of dinosaur we have with evidence-based reasoning. They will also present their findings and listen to others' responses.

Fuentes
In each class we will use background information from the Dinosaur page from the British Natural History Museum website (https://www.nhm.ac.uk/discover/dinosaurs.html). Learners are also invited to draw an Allosaurus step-by-step as a fun activity before or after the class (this is a separate YouTube tutorial, not part of the drawing we'll do during the class time: https://youtu.be/pbT2G9qGiqU). These links will also be posted following the class on the Classroom page.

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
I'm a certified teacher, and I believe learning happens all the time, in and out of the classroom. I love to teach Writing--I've taught creative and analytical writing to college, elementary, and middle school students--and Science--about which I've led public education programs as a park ranger and dedicated years to teaching in the classroom. I also love to share some of my passions for baking, which I grew up doing with my family, and for getting outside to backpack, identify living things, and explore!

I have an MEd in Elementary Education (K-6) and have taught all subjects for 3rd graders, Math and Language Arts for 7th graders, and Science and Language Arts for 6th graders for the past seven years in a project-based school. I also have an MFA (Master of Fine Arts) in Creative Writing from the University of Arizona, where I taught college Composition courses, and an MA in Geography, a program that combined biology, ecology, and anthropology. During my grad school years I taught college writing and geography courses, edited a journal, and worked as a docent for the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. I graduated from Middlebury College, where I studied Nonfiction Writing and Environmental Studies. During summers in college and graduate school, I worked for the National Park Service and the Student Conservation Association getting my hands dirty and teaching others how to care for our environment.

Through all of the different hats I've worn, I've been a teacher, and this has been my passion. I've taught in one-room schoolhouses in the Andes, in college classrooms, on trails as a park ranger and guide, and in the woods as I've led trail crews in the wilderness. I believe the best learning--no matter the level--comes from realizing how much you're able to achieve by yourself, and from finding things that you're passionate about. I'm excited to learn with you and from you!

My husband and I have two little boys and a dog, and our favorite things to do are to go camping, make pancakes, find cool turtles and snakes, and read!
