My goal is to create a fun, creative learning environment where students can comfortably talk shop about their digital art projects, bring their imagination to life, and share their unique digital artworks with one another.

Each class will begin with introductions. Students are welcome to share any digital art they've made. I will introduce a new creative theme for a digital collage project, such as fairy tales, monsters and magical creatures, or movie posters where you are the star of your favorite movie!

Students will complete their new creative project, independently in each class using their choice of digital art program. I will be demonstrating via screenshare how to create a project based on the theme of the week. In my demonstrations, I will usually be using Photopea.com, a free online version of Photoshop. For some projects, I may use Sketchbook for Android, another free app. Students may follow along with my demonstration or use my idea as inspiration for creating their own digital masterpiece.

This class is for all skill levels of digital artist, although students are required to know how to use the basic tools of their chosen digital art program. Some popular photo editing and digital art programs are Adobe Photoshop, Procreate, Krita, ibis Paint, Sketchbook, PicsArt, and Photopea.com. Any other program with basic photo editing tools will work fine for this class. Please message me before class with any technical questions about which app to use.

This is not a directed drawing class or a digital app tutorial class. Students should know the basics of how to use their choice of program before joining the class. Students should also know how to search the internet for photos to include in their photo collage or drawing. They will need to be able to locate downloaded photos on their device, create a new file in their art program, use the select, cut and paste functions, create layers, and save their work.

It is easier for students to share what they are doing and get help if their digital art app or program is being used on the same device running Zoom.

I highly recommended that students use a stylus. Using a computer mouse is ok, but using a finger on a touchpad or touchscreen can be challenging and very frustrating when learning how to digitally draw or edit photos. I strongly recommend against using a laptop trackpad as these are the most difficult to control for young users.

Weekly private lessons similar to this same class format or tutoring classes in specific digital art apps are available upon request. Please message me for details.

Materials Needed: 🖼️ Wikipedia is a great resource for copyright free photos. Students will need to download their own photos for their photo collages. 💡 It is easier for students to share what they are doing and get help if their digital art app or program is being used on the same device running Zoom. Please log into the Outschool classroom on the same device as your art app. 💡 I will be using Photopea.com and/or Sketchbook app to screenshare demonstrations. Your learner is welcome to use any of the following digital art programs to create their masterpieces for this class: Procreate, Adobe Photoshop, Photopea.com, Autodesk Sketchbook, Krita, ibisPaint, and PicsArt. Similar programs will also work, but message me if you have any questions. 💻 Procreate is the most popular digital art tool right now, but it is only available for iPad. It’s great for digital drawing and has photo editing capabilities. Find it at https://procreate.art/ipad 💻 Adobe Photoshop is still the industry standard for photo editing and digital art. It is available for any device in a paid edition, but free and “lite” editions exist for mobile devices. Find it at https://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop or search your app store for "Photoshop." 💻 Photopea.com is free online software that works nearly exactly like Adobe Photoshop and is great for students using a laptop. Students who have not purchased and installed Photoshop on their computer may opt to use Photopea instead if they have a strong internet connection. Find it at https://www.photopea.com 💻 Sketchbook is a free app available for all devices: Windows, Android, tablets, iPad, iPhone. A pro paid version is also available. This app is great for drawing with digital layers and has the basic selection, cut, and paste tools necessary for making a photo collage. Find it at https://www.sketchbook.com/apps 💻 Krita is a free, open source software for all devices with photo editing capabilities but built for illustration. Find it at https://krita.org 💻 ibisPaint is an easy-to-use digital drawing tool and photo editing app available for Windows, MacOS, Android and iPad. Free and paid versions. Find it at https://ibispaint.com/about.jsp 💻 PicsArt is available in free or paid editions for all devices. I do not recommend this program, but it is a fully functional digital art and photo editing app. Find it at https://picsart.com/gold
