Optional homework: make a model of your rocket!Calificación

This class will teach the key features of a space rocket, analyse what forces are acting on the rocket and discuss how we can design space rockets to maximise their efficiency. Children will then design their own space rocket and create a poster promoting how it works. Optional homework: make a model of your rocket! UK curriculum links: forces and motion (KS3)/ space physics (KS3) - but with a more creative twist! This class is structured into three parts: 1. Introduction: the parts and features of a rocket. 2. Forces: analysing the forces acting on a rocket and discussing the links between force, acceleration and air resistance. 3. Design: designing your own space rocket to maximise its efficiency. My teaching style tends to be very structured, as I always prepare presentation slides to accompany my lessons and ensure there are key learning objectives. However, it's not all hard work - I also bring my fun personality and enthusiasm for science, and love to combine formal learning with more creative projects! My classes are also highly interactive - I have a personal rule that children should talk more than me in order to really learn from the session, so I ensure that there are plenty of opportunities for discussion, exciting activities, fun projects or mini games to keep them engaged! In terms of required prior knowledge, children should have a basic understanding of forces (the idea that forces/ pushes and pulls cause things to move) and an awareness of the solar system/ space. Note that there is no mathematical content in this class, so zero maths skills needed!
Metas de aprendizaje
Children will learn the key forces: weight (gravity), thrust, air resistance. They will learn that forces cause objects to accelerate, whereas a lack of overall force/ balanced forces cause objects to move at a constant speed or remain stationary. Finally, they will conclude that to reduce air resistance, the rocket should have a streamlined shape, and a balance must be found between the power of a rocket and weight of the fuel.
