Ever wonder how a person is poisoned by mushrooms? How could they eat something so deadly, and where did they find them? Toxic fungi are innocent looking and it's impossible to tell that a mushroom is poisonous just by looking at it; they could be growing in your own backyard! Join me and we'll discuss the deadliest fungal species, their toxic agents, and where the species can be found. Students will understand how toxic mushrooms spread, and affect us and other organisms. We'll have a special focus on the deadliest mushroom, the Death Cap (Amanita phalloides), and discover why it is spreading across North America. Students will learn how to differentiate a poisonous mushroom from a look-alike species, and why it's better to be safe than sorry. We'll practice safe mushroom handling and a posionous mushroom handout will be provided for students to use on their own mushroom hunts. Photo by Frank Albrecht on Unsplash

Orientación para padres
We will be discussing the symptoms of mushroom poisoning, which may frighten some students. I'll be using this to emphasize the importance of cautious mushroom hunting and we will talk about how many people and animals die from mushroom poisoning each year. If your student is sensitive to this material but wants to take the class just let me know.

Hi students and guardians!
My name is Maddy and I'm a Dutch American living in Amsterdam. I grew up in Southern California and I came to NL to study and decided to stay. Before moving to Amsterdam I lived in London where I taught about air quality and sustainable transportation. I've also lived in Rhode Island, Melbourne (Australia), and San Francisco.
Education
I have a Master of Science in Industrial Ecology from TU Delft and Leiden University and a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science and Management from the University of Rhode Island. I'm currently doing research for a Ph.D. in sustainable consumption at the University of Amsterdam.
Teaching experience
I've been teaching on Outschool since 2018. My teaching experience began as a tutor when I was a teenager and I continued tutoring throughout high school and college. I was a summer camp instructor for multiple years, and I taught after-school science and technology programs at San Francisco schools. I have been an assistant director at an outdoor summer camp, and I taught sustainability at London schools. My previous experiences also include construction planning, wetland restoration, and sustainability consulting.
My classes focus on the natural sciences and technology but I am constantly finding new interests and understanding the science behind anything is fascinating. If we do a small amount of investigation we can see how connected our natural world is!
My passion for science and sustainability comes from my love for the outdoors. In my free time I love to hike, surf, mountain bike, SCUBA dive, bake, and travel! I like to intertwine learning with adventure to understand the wonders of our world. I use my experiences to make science easy to understand and relatable.
Anyone can be a scientist! Our world has many complex issues and we need more curious minds to find creative solutions. My goal is to get your student curious so each class will be upbeat, easy to understand, and welcoming! I use a combination of visual and auditory learning to create an engaging experience. I like to explain processes and reinforce them with reputable, scholarly videos. Students are encouraged to ask questions and share experiences, but participation is not required. I will also share supplemental materials so students can continue learning outside the classroom.
Cancellations and rescheduling
If a class does not have the minimum learners (3 per class), 24 hours before class, then I will notify enrolled students and push back the meeting by a week. If this new time does not work, students will be given the option to transfer to a section that does or a full refund. A class will not be rescheduled more than once due to low enrollments. If you notice that enrollments are low for your class then feel free to share the class with friends or classmates to avoid rescheduling.
Don't see a section that works for you? Please send me a schedule request or a private message and I'll make one that does.
I can't wait to meet you!
