😀*This is a self-paced class with NO live meetings. 😀*I am the author of over 25 chapter books for children and a former teacher. I have also been published in magazines, newspapers, blogs, and Chicken Soup for the Soul books. I am currently writing adult cozy mystery books and writing and marketing as my main job. Writing is literally part of my life every day, and I love it. I talk to students about my writing and the writing process and help to foster their own creativity. I have a unique experience set that can help kids to take their big ideas to paper/computer and to organize them into unique stories of their own. I hope to be an encouraging mentor to students with great ideas! If kids can write about what interests them, they are more likely to want to write! I am here for the reluctant and the encouraging writer. 😃One of my parent reviews best describes my goal for my writing classes: "If your child is stuck on getting started, Marcy has a way to pull out the 'stuckage' so to speak in a fun and patient way." PARENT 😃Please check my reviews, especially my creative writing class reviews! 😀*BS in elementary education *MS in educational administration 😀*This is a CREATIVE writing class, not a formal essay class and not a grammar class. 😀In this 7-week class we will spend some in-depth time focusing on the major parts of a story with practice on those elements leading to the student choosing and forming a story idea of their own and beginning a rough draft. 😀Students will have one main writing assignment a week. They may submit the writing to me for written assessment (but not a grade). 📅Week 1: 1-Video lesson about story characters: What makes a good character? Who are some of your favorites? Why? What books have you read that have great characters? Why? 2-Learn about story protagonists, antagonists, and minor characters and the roles they play. 3-Students will view my Canva slide presentation from the classroom that goes over the points in the video. 4-Students will practice writing a character sketch after choosing one of my prompts and pretend they are having dinner with this character. 5-I will respond to the character sketch with gentle, constructive insights. 📅Week 2: 1-Video lesson about story settings: What makes a story setting? What books have you read that have great settings? Why? Share the book with me! 2-Students will view my Canva slide presentation from the classroom that goes over the points in the video. 3-Students will practice writing a story paragraph about a setting based upon picture prompts using the elements of a good setting (picture prompts provided by me). 4-I will respond to the setting paragraphs with gentle, constructive insights. 📅Week 3: 1. Video instruction about story starters. 2. Students will view my Canva slide presentation from the classroom that goes over the points in the video. 3. Students will practice writing exciting story starters from picture prompts. 4.-I will respond to writing samples. 📅Week 4: 1-Video lesson about plot, problem, and solution 2-Students will view my Canva slide presentation from the classroom that goes over the points in the video. 3-Two story organizers, a world building worksheet, and a character sketch worksheet will be provided. 4.-I will respond to the story ideas your child is creating that are shared in the classroom. 📅Week 5: 1-Video lesson about story genres: What are common genres? What genre do you prefer? 2-Students will view my Canva slide presentation from the classroom that goes over the points in the video. 3-Students will practice writing story paragraphs in two different genres using the same picture prompt (provided by the teacher). I will respond to the paragraphs with gentle, constructive insights. 📅Week 6: 1. Writing! I will respond to student rough drafts, even if they only get a few pages. I will personalize my comments to each student, going over plot issues, character and setting issues, and minor grammar concerns that impede the story. I can review up to 10 pages, single spaced (or 20 pages doubled spaced). 📅Week 7: 1. Writing! I will respond to students rough drafts, even if they only get a few pages. I will personalize my comments to each student, going over plot issues, character and setting issues, and minor grammar concerns that impede the story. I can review up to 10 pages, single spaced (or 20 pages doubled spaced). *It is not a requirement that the child finish the story within the context of our class. I don't believe in putting a timeline on a creative story. 😎*Important: Students will have one main writing assignment a week. They may submit the writing to me for written assessment. The course covers seven weeks of lessons. I can respond to assignments during those seven weeks only. Thank you. I will respond within those seven weeks in a timely manner, usually well within 24 hours.😎
