In this ten-session class, students will work with various literary genres. We will read and write works within the following general scopes, exploring different themes and genres within each.

Our class routine will be somewhat as follows but may be subject to change as students will complete more in-class workshops on their original works near the end of the program.

1. Discussion on general literary elements (such as figurative language).

2. Read and discuss a short story, poem, etc., that showcases the literary element we're focusing on (please note this reading may be homework to allow for a more robust class discussion).

3. Students will complete a short, in-class writing drill based on the theme we're targeting that day. They can choose to revise this for homework or create new writing to apply the theme we focused on that day.

4. Reviewing student work and/or reviewing concepts for understanding.

Below is a general idea of the type of content we'll cover. Please note that it may be subject to change.

Figurative language (review common types of figurative language such as simile and metaphor and how they impact writing).

Imagery and Sensory Details (how writers paint a picture with words)

Tone and Mood (How word choice can change how a story sounds)

Dialogue (why it matters in fiction and non-fiction and how to use it effectively)

Plot progression (focusing on parts of a plot including rising action, climax, and falling action)

Students are encouraged to create new work during this course. We will work to have students stretch their creative minds across various writing styles and purposes.
