In this course, you will learn how to make an actual, real-life, in-person escape room game. Imagine the fun your family and friends will have as they decipher a puzzle made from plastic blocks, reveal a hidden message on a mirror, and shoot foam darts at an object to reveal a code and open a lock! Here is the backstory of the game you will create: You are hosting a surprise birthday party for your best friend, Logan. You sent a text message to invite Logan's friends, but immediately after hitting 'send', you realized that Logan was included in the group text. You call Logan's mother to see if she can erase the text before Logan sees it, but she tells you that they are at the dentist's office while Logan is having some cavities filled and that the phone was left at home. She gives you the code to enter the home through the garage and tells you to go find Logan's phone and erase the text. They will be home in one hour. Because the ultimate goal of this escape room game is to find the phone and erase the text, a phone is essential for this class. The only other required item is a tablet or a laptop. There are specific puzzles and props for this game that can be made using shoes, plastic blocks, a foam dart gun, letter tiles, playing cards, boxes, locks, and a mirror. However, if you don’t have these items, I have given alternate ideas in the lesson documents. You will receive step-by-step instructions in each lesson through a video and a written document. I will answer questions as soon as possible, but no later than Wednesday or Saturday. Questions sent between 7:00 AM Wednesday and 7:00 AM Saturday will be answered by 7:00 PM MST Saturday. All other questions will be answered by 7:00 PM Wednesday.

I remember the excitement and intrigue I felt many years ago when I first read about escape room games. After playing my first room, I was hooked! After playing a few more games, I thought, "I can make one of these!" So, I started designing my own games for my family members and friends. Before the pandemic, my husband and I were actively pursuing the opportunity to start our own escape room business, but we have decided to put that dream on hold for now. Instead, I am excited to share my love for these games with Outschool students!
