In this introductory calculus class, students will learn the basics of differentiation. Topics taught will include the limit definition of the derivative; the power, product, chain, and quotient rules; using derivatives to graph functions; optimization and maximization word problems; and L'Hopital's rule. The class will be taught through an interactive lecture based on active learning, which means that students will be solving problems together as soon as they learn the concepts. Questions are encouraged throughout the lectures! We will start each class with a short, interactive slide-show with our topic for the day. We will then move onto solving some problems based on this topic together, moving into more difficult problems. We will end our class by relating that day's topic to previous and future topics. The following is a day-by-day breakdown of what topics we will cover in class: Day 1: Average rate of change, tangent and secant lines Day 2: Introducing the derivative Day 3: Limit definition of the derivative Day 4: Power rule Day 5: Product rule Day 6: Trigonometric and exponential derivatives Day 7: Quotient rule Day 8: Chain rule Day 9: Using derivatives to graph functions Day 10: Optimization problems Day 11: Related rates problems Day 12: L'Hopital's rule In order to successfully complete this class, students should have pre-requisite knowledge of high-school algebra and trigonometry.
