Experiencia de clase

The Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival is celebrated by many Asian countries on the night of the brightest full moon during the Autumn season. A common tradition is to carry and display lanterns of all shapes and sizes to symbolize light and good fortune.

This year, the Mid-Autumn Festival takes place on Tuesday, September 17, 2024.

In this one-time class, students will learn the origins of the myth surrounding the Mid-Autumn Festival, and I will discuss the difference between cultural traditions. As I'm a Vietnamese teacher, I'll also teach the kids how to say "Happy Mid-Autumn Festival" in Vietnamese. We'll do all this while students learn to fold a paper lantern that is sturdy enough to carry an electric tea light!

FORMAT:
5 minutes - Greetings & questions
10 minutes - Learning the basic folds
15 minutes - Students continue folding while I discuss the cultural significance and traditions of the Mid-Autumn Festival from a Vietnamese and Chinese perspective, sharing with the class the similarities and differences between these two cultures.
5 minutes - Video on the origin myth of the Mid-Autumn Festival.
10 minutes - Final assembly and wrap-up

Students will leave the class with a fully completed lantern, ready to be used immediately.

IMPORTANT NOTES:
- There is some prep work (cutting) to be done before class starts so that we can work on folds and assembly in class.
