Tarea

1 hora por semana. Students will receive chess puzzle sheets to be printed out. The chess puzzle sheets will be discussed in class to make sure all students understand how to solve them.

Evaluación

A learner is assessed by understanding the answers on each chess puzzle sheet and knowing how to checkmate to win their games. When a student practices chess at home with others, or on-line, their skills will increase--this will reflect in their knowledge of the game.

Nivel Beginner

The students will learn how to make an Arabian Checkmate by using a Knight and a Rook to checkmate the King trapped in a corner. This checkmate is one of the oldest checkmates because the moves of the Knight and Rook have not changed for over a thousand years, while the moves of the other pieces have changed. The students will also learn how to do the Hallway Checkmate by trapping the King in the middle of the board by using Rooks or Queens to guard the Ranks or Files, or "Hallways" on the chessboard.

The students will become stronger chess players when they learn how to spot the possible checkmates on the board and use their pieces to effectively carry out the checkmating plan. The Arabian Checkmate and the Hallway Checkmate are basic checkmates that all chess players need to know to improve their playing skills.

We will be using the lichess.org website for students to play chess games on-line. The students will be copying the game link and pasting it in the Zoom Chat Box for other students to click on and access the game. Usernames and passwords to lichess.org will not be used for this class.

Students should have a pencil in class and the chess puzzles printed out, which will be attached in a PDF form in the Classroom.

I have taught children and adults in Beginning and Intermediate 1 Chess classes for 23 years in after school programs, summer Chess Camps, online in my Cool Chess classes and now for Central New York Chess. I love to see how Chess helps the brain to think, to make predictions, to sequence, see patterns, etc. I love to see when a student learns how to checkmate and improves upon their game! I teach One Time Cool Chess classes and Private and Multi-Day Classes with Central New York Chess. I enjoy Art, Chess, Scrapbooking, and Travel! I hope to see you in my chess classes soon!
