T E A C H I N G A P P R O A C H
I have worked with students who span both the globe and entire spectrum of abilities, including highly gifted, twice exceptional, and learners with specific learning disabilities. I am a classroom level Orton Gillingham practitioner, and incorporate the multisensory approach of OG in my math courses.

My math instruction style involves moving from concrete -->pictorial --> abstract in our progression of each new topic. Initial problems will involve concrete, real life examples. Children will then see pictorial examples, and finally, abstract numeric examples. I utilize the interactive whiteboard, and encourage the children to do so as well. Color, pictures, and models are incorporated whenever appropriate. Appropriate scaffolding/ support will be provided as needed.

Instructor will review rules of adding fractions with students. We will work out problems together and individually.

INTRODUCTION TO MIXED NUMBERS
Instructor will introduce the concept of mixed numbers to students using real world examples. Students will work to identify the whole number portion and the fraction portion of mixed numbers. We will discuss why we might choose to present numbers in this format.

INTRODUCTION TO IMPROPER FRACTIONS
Instructor will introduce the concept of an improper fraction. We will work to identify improper fractions. We will discuss why we might choose to present numbers in this format, and what situations might require it.

CHANGING IMPROPER FRACTIONS TO MIXED NUMBERS
We will learn to convert fractions with a beginner level strategy: repeated subtraction.

CHANGING MIXED NUMBERS TO IMPROPER FRACTIONS
We will look at situations where we might be presented with a mixed numbers, and think up strategies to convert this into an improper fraction. Students' attention will be drawn to finding clues that help us select the right denominator. We will use a beginner level strategy, utilizing models and addition only.

RECAP AND EXIT PROBLEM
We will recap everything we have covered, and students will be left with an exit ticket problem, which they can submit to the Outschool classroom, where they will be given feedback.

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
I have been teaching and tutoring students for over 20 years, as a middle school and high school teacher, a college adjunct, and children's museum educator.

I am passionate about bringing meaningful content to students. As an educator, I am constantly seeking new ways to incorporate best practices and draw from a wide body of pedagogy, including the self-guided approach of Maria Montessori, the artistic lessons and story-based approach of holistic models, the multiple intelligence theory of Howard Gardner, the high-quality literature of Charlotte Mason, and the community of learners approach of Reggio Emilia.

My undergraduate studies led me to a dual degree in Spanish and Economics, where I focused on developing economies in Latin America, studying in Costa Rica and Ecuador. I later received a Fulbright scholarship and spent a year studying at the University of Stuttgart, and completing an internship in Bonn, focused on Spanish and Latin American markets. After returning to the US, I worked as a college assistant, middle school and high school teacher, and museum educator.

My graduate work focused on Social Studies, with my Master's Thesis centering on bringing the arts into core academics, drawing from my experiences with holistic models of education.

I am a homeschool mom to three, with one already graduated. My oldest, began her schooling journey at home, using a holistic approach to education, with an abundance of art, nature, and literature, centering largely around the principles of Charlotte Mason and other early 20th century educational reformers. She graduated with full scholarships to top tier universities. My second child began his journey with public school before transitioning to Montessori, and finally, to homeschooling. As an asynchronous learner, homeschooling is a perfect fit for him. My youngest has also attended both Montessori and public school, and is now homeschooling as well. Whenever possible, we use place based education with the motto, "the world is our classroom."

Fun fact - I am a polyglot and have had a keen interest in learning languages from a young age.
