This six week course will cover everything your daughter needs to know about late puberty, sex and making healthy choices in intimate relationships. The classroom offers a safe space for girls to discuss their bodies with other girls. This is beneficial to open conversation and helpful to realizations that there are many ways to be “normal”. This class provides an inclusive, safe space. This course is intended for girls who are in the late/end stages of puberty or have completed puberty. Although 13 is the starting age for this class, many 13 years olds will not be ready for information provided. Please consider your young teen's maturity level carefully before enrolling her. Human reproductive anatomy and physiology will be taught thoroughly. Sex will be discussed in detail, with care and respect. This class is completely secular. Abstinence will be discussed as one normal and healthy choice, but not as a method of birth control or as the only "right" choice. Gender identity and sexual orientation will be discussed without judgement. Current research shows that adolescents who are given complete and accurate information about sex and their bodies delay first sexual contact and make healthier choices when they do decide to engage in sexual activity. When it comes to sexual education, we can truly arm our children with information. Week One: Female sex hormones and their roles Am I "normal"? Social media, advertising and self image Week Two: Female anatomy - external Male anatomy - external Secondary sex characteristics Week Three: Female reproductive system anatomy and physiology Male reproductive system anatomy and physiology Gender identity and sexual orientation Week Four: Sex: How will I know when I’m ready? How can I stay safe and healthy? Week Five: Consent and safety Intimate partner violence Week Six: Self-esteem Self-care As this is a flex class, there are no live meetings. Students may complete class work on their own schedule, but will be expected to move forward at the weekly pace of the class to allow for discussion and ensure understanding. Each week, students will be asked to work through a lesson that will be posted in the Oustchool classroom. Lessons will include a lecture video and assignments that correspond with the teaching. Students will be expected to answer interactive questions and encouraged to engage in on-topic conversation in the Outschool classroom. Families choose flexible format (non-live) classes for many reasons. The most common, being the opportunity to access the course material on your own time and not have to schedule around the class. Flex courses can be taken anytime, anywhere! Additionally, sensitive subject areas are difficult for some students to discuss in person (such as behavioral health or puberty). Flex classes give students a measure of anonymity that can be comforting. Students enrolled in this class will have ample opportunity to interact through discussion questions. I respond to student answers on a near-daily basis. I enjoy the opportunity to take time answering each student's questions that the flex format affords me!

I have worked in women’s health since 1999. I provided nursing care in OBGYN clinics and labor and delivery units of hospitals while serving in the Navy. Later, I designed and implemented a women’s health course for refugee women. As a school social worker, I provided classroom based programming for teen mothers as well as individual counseling. I went on to provide home based therapy for pregnant women and new mothers with depression for the University of Texas. Finally, I was a labor and delivery social worker at a hospital that delivered over 1200 babies each year. I have 4 children of my own, including 3 teenagers. I will handle this education with the same care that I have with each of my own children.
