Using comic art not only motivates children to read and enables them to enjoy a richer imagined world when reading comics. This class helps them to take that wonderful imagination and turn their pages of art into the accompanying story and a polished comic. Students will learn the recipe for developing a comic strip. Before drawing the comic strip, they will learn to write the story and develop the characters and setting that they intend to relay in the comic strip. After writing the story, they will be in a better position to start the hilarious journey of cartooning. As an inspiration for your story, please bring your favorite childhood book to class. Was it "All by Myself (Little Critter),. ... The Little Engine That Could, Dragons Love Tacos, The Story of Ferdinando"? You choose. You can use this book as the inspiration for your comic story. Class 1 • Students are introduced to a range of practical techniques and activities which focus on various aspects of narrative writing. • Students who think in pictures often find writing a challenge so we will complete several fun group activities. • Students will begin work on developing an outline for their short story. Class 2 • Develop the characters and setting • Students will design the hero and villain of their stories. The lesson will describe the character traits of heroes, and how these traits can be represented in words and pictures • I will demonstrate simple cartoon sketches that they can adapt to fit their characters. Class 3 • Learn comic book terminology • Begin the process of putting the storyline into the cartoon panels. • Unknowingly, this practice will allow children to take interest in and pay attention to their handwriting because they will need to exercise caution when writing within the boundaries set for the strip. Class 4 • Students will be provided with tips and techniques to bring their comic creation to life. • Illustration techniques will be demonstrated • Students will be asked to complete their projects and share them with classmates This is a small class limited to 6 students so that I can work individually with each student. This is a great follow-up to Dog Man Comic Club. Perfect for students who are ready to move into characterization and more story development. Please note - during vacation periods this class may be scheduled 1X a week for 4 weeks OR 4 times in one week. Please check the schedule carefully.

I have always been obsessed with writing. I remember in the third grade I wrote a short story and my teacher chose me to present it in a city-wide oratory. I was hooked, I wanted to be a writer. In college, I took many classes in writing but they seemed to stifle my creativity and my career took a different direction. I also love art! What better way to combine passions than cartooning?!
For me, writing is a way of breaking away from reality because, as one of my professors told me, the paper will never reject my pen. Now, I enjoy blogging, journaling, and teaching creative writing to young learners. I hope to see your child in my classroom!
