Students will have the opportunity to share their work with other students live during each lesson. Please take a photo of your child’s work and either post the photos to the classroom to share with classmates or send message to the teacher. Zoom video images are never as clear as a photo sent by a parent. These images will help the teacher give more helpful and accurate feedback. Just include a note if your learner is uncomfortable sharing their work with their classmates.

My goal is to create a fun, creative learning environment where students can comfortably learn and share their ideas with others who also love comics. Students will bring their imagination to life, invent unique characters and stories, and have the opportunity to share their art with other students. This class is great place for aspiring authors, comic artists, and game developers to create characters, illustrate their backstory, and develop a style.

*** NOTE: During the regular school year, please join me in the ongoing class, Comic Book Creations Club! ***

Day 1-- Overview of Comics; Designing your own Characters
Students introduce themselves and share their favorite comic (if they have one.) Comics overview-- what is a comic? What kinds of stories do they tell? Discuss the funnies, Calvin and Hobbes, Marvel and DC universes, the age of Superman, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Dogman, Bone, shoujo and shonen manga, graphic novels.
We will identify the basic shapes used to create some famous characters like SpongeBob and Mickey Mouse, then students will use my shape worksheet to design their own unique characters.

Day 2-- Characters in Action
We will look at some famous characters in action and examine how comic artists draw moving character bodies and action lines. Students will create a 3-panel comic with step-by-step action sequences using the worksheets provided.

Day 3-- Telling a Story with Cause and Effect
We will talk about the parts of a story (protagonist, antagonist, setting, conflict, plotline, rising action, climax, resolution) and design a story together. We will look at some examples of visual story-telling without words. Students will analyze some famous fairytales and turn them into a 4-panel comic using the template provided.

Day 4 -- Adding Text bubbles, Blams, & how to draw them
We will look at various kinds of word bubbles and blams and their use with and without the use of text. Students will create their own unique story using the characters designed on Day 1. I will demonstrate how to use a random story generator (randomization of protagonist, genre, action, etc.) for students who "don't have any ideas."

Day 5 -- Your Masterwork
We will review parts of a story and analyze another a famous story, this time to practice dividing a story into 6 parts to turn it into a 6-part comic. Students will begin work on their final comic using the 6-panel worksheet.

NOTE TO PARENTS:
Students will have the opportunity to share their work with other students live during each lesson. Parents, after each class, please take a photo of your child’s work and either post the photos to the classroom to share with classmates or send message to the teacher. Orientación para padres
Warning: Comic books, especially superhero comics, usually contain violent conflicts, violent images, and weapons. While I discourage my students from creating gore for gore's sake and generally consider guns to be the most boring weapon in a story, my focus in these comics classes is to help students communicate a story that makes sense, not to attempt to remove the violent element from the superhero genre. If you as a parent find violence distasteful or do not wish your child to depict violent images, please discuss this with your learner.
