Chess for (Younger) Tigers is the perfect introductory chess club/class for younger students. The small class size, shorter duration, and live games played only against me are designed to make sure your student’s first experiences learning and playing chess are fun and encouraging.

We warm up with puzzles exploring one tactical theme. I share my screen and we will solve puzzles together using a question and answer format, discussing pros and cons of various moves. Then we will explore a very short (4-15 moves) instructive game that focuses more on strategic ideas, again discussing pros and cons of every move. Finally we each login to https://lichess.org where I will play live games with each student.

All of my group classes are not set up as recurring/subscription. You can sign up for the same class any number of times. I know it can be a hassle to enroll every week but many of my students and families like the drop in structure. Some take the same class every week, others come 2 or 3 times each week, and some just drop in occasionally. I work hard to bring fresh material to every class and shape it around skill level as much as possible. I post my schedule at least a month in advance so it is possible to book several classes at once.

I make interactive lessons to support the work we do in class. I follow up every meeting with a link so your student can continue studying independently between sessions. Here is an example of an essential checkmate pattern we study in class: https://lichess.org/study/F2gEDnxX

**Prerequisites**
Students should be very comfortable with how the pieces move and capture before taking this course. If they need a refresher or are starting from the beginning they should first take my class called Chess for Sparrows | Beginner Crash Course.

**Prep for First Class** During the second half of class students will need to be able to click a link in the Zoom chat then drop and drag pieces on a 2D chess board to play live games. Please help your student find the chat in the Zoom call before class. Ideally they should be at least basically familiar with playing chess online. We will be using lichess.org for our live games but please don’t download the app, the web version works much better. It is not necessary to create an account but if you do please be sure to turn on Kid Mode: https://lichess.org/account/kid

I'm looking forward to working on chess together!

When school went remote in March of 2020 my chess club (where I taught full time) thrived. This led to curriculum development, program development, and coaching work at the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth, SciGenius, BudBe, Zinkers, and the Chicago Chess Foundation. Before that I taught for three years at the Berkeley Chess School.

Chess is on the cutting edge of a shift toward globally connected, self directed, and play oriented education. I am thrilled to be part of it. As a self taught player currently rated over 2000 I have become an expert in using the most advanced learning tools available to bring lessons to life. I love helping young people discover and excel at this beautiful game.
