This social chess club is for players of all skill-levels that already are familiar with how the game is played. This is not a class on HOW to play chess. If your child still needs to learn the rules of the game, please check out my "Beginner Chess" classes using the URL above.

When we have a new learner join us we'll do a quick get-to-know-you and I'll ask about some of their favorite things (Games, books, foods animals?). This is a great way to connect and find what we all have in common, and I also use it to inspire me to make chess boards that will engage my players.

We play on a Google Slides presentation created by myself where each person drags the pieces on the board. This is best done using a mouse or trackpad, and can be very difficult with a touchscreen. A "Go" button is used to indicate when your turn is over. On-topic talking is allowed, questions are encouraged, but it's still a game of concentration so we stay respectful to our opponents by not being disruptive. Chess boards will be assigned usually in order of arrival, however I try to mix it up so students play as many different opponents as possible. My teaching style in this class is pretty laid-back. I like to laugh with my students and keep the vibes light and positive.

I have each player choose a number and roll dice on camera to determine who goes first. If 2 players play more than once in a row, I'll have them switch who is going first.

Once we have everyone sorted into games, I'll usually put us into breakout rooms and hop from room to room and responding to any requests for help. It's a great tool to keep the noise level down and communication open between players.

I have a very large monitor specifically for this class. I have each game open on my screen in a separate window no matter which breakout room I'm in. I do my best to keep an eye on the games evenly, checking to make sure there are no problems, and trying to give feedback when needed. If any disagreements come up that cannot be agreed on, I have each person pick a number, and roll the dice. I very rarely need to do this, but it's my go-to just in case!

Please note that this is not a class with "instruction", however this is an opportunity for students to play and socialize for fun with other kids. They will learn through experience, by playing others with varying levels of ability. I am there as a facilitator to pair everyone up, answer, questions, suggest and provide minigames when appropriate, and try to keep everyone engaged.
Metas de aprendizaje
I want my students to learn:
1. The value of LOSING. When you lose a game, you were taught something, and get the opportunity to grow!
2. The love of playing chess; so valuable
3. Strategies to help them improve their game of course!
