Experiencia de clase

In this course, students are introduced to the structure of electrons in an atom and how two elements can form an ionic bond. Finally, students will practice creating a model of an ionic bond.

Prior to class, students will complete a pre-test. The lesson will begin with a brief lecture of vocabulary and concepts, followed by an opportunity for students to practice identifying the number of valence electrons an element has. We will discuss how ionic bonds are formed, and students will practice forming ionic bonds between a metal and non-metal. Students will complete a post-test to see what they have learned.

If your learner would like to take all the classes in this series, this is the recommended order of classes:
Chemistry Is Elemental! Introduction to Atoms and Elements on the Periodic Table
Chemistry Is Elemental! Ions and Isotopes
Chemistry Is Elemental! Groups on the Periodic Table
Chemistry Is Elemental! Valence Electrons and Ionic Bonds
Chemistry Is Elemental! Properties of Ionic and Covalent Bonds

Metas de aprendizaje

This course is aligned to the Next Generations Science Standards listed below:
MS-PS1-1 Matter and its Interactions: Develop models to describe the atomic composition of simple molecules and extended structures.
HS-PS1-1 Matter and its Interactions: Use the periodic table as a model to predict the relative properties of elements based on the patterns of electrons in the outermost energy level of atoms.
Vocabulary: atom, element, valence electron, bonding, metals, nonmetals, ionic bond

Hello! My name is Paige, and I am a middle and high school science teacher in Georgia. I have a B.A. from Emory University in sociology and environmental science and a Masters of Education from Kennesaw State University. I have taught environmental science, computer science, biology, and physical science for the last 10 years. I am an experienced special education and gifted teacher, and I welcome all diverse learners in my classroom with open arms. If your child requires accommodations to be successful in class, let me know and I will do my best to provide your child additional support in the classroom.

My classes are aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards and are designed to support learners with the more challenging concepts in science. I believe that every child can experience success with science when the instruction is engaging and supportive, and it is with this mindset that I deliver every Outschool class I offer. I look forward to meeting and educating your child!
