The teacher will present a weekly guide with steps, resources and suggested timelines for students to complete a personalized roadmap to college. Students will be encouraged to ask questions that apply to the group during class meetings and can expect personalized feedback to questions specific to their situation through private messaging. Students will be given resources and are encouraged to complete tasks outside of class meetings. All class meetings will be recorded and available offline during the following week so that students can refer to the content as needed. Topics include: Financing Higher Education, Scholarships, Recommendations and Essays, Your Best College Fit, Standardized Testing, How to Improve/Overcome your GPA. Week One: Getting to know you - develop a personalized timeline and discover why creating and maintaining a resume that highlights your accomplishments is important. Important questions to ask college recruiters, teachers and parents. Week Two: Finances - How your GPA and standardized test scores can reduce the cost of higher education. Finding scholarships, work-study opportunities, and internships in support of financing your education. Know the difference between community colleges, liberal arts colleges and universities, and how you can save money and time. Alternatives to taking the SAT or ACT. Week Three: Know yourself - The approach to college applications is not one-size-fits-all. Discover your strengths, preferences and values and how this influences your college search. You will be provided with questionnaires and websites to research on your own. Learn what admissions counselors are looking for in a college essay. Week Four: The Application - What do "early decision" and "early action" mean? When should you submit your application? You will get an introduction to US general applications such as CommonApp, ApplyTexas, Coalition Application, and California applications. Considerations for International Students and studying abroad. Applications to Canada, Australia and the UK will be covered for students considering those locations.

Students will improve their understanding of the college admissions process and take steps to prepare for life after high school. Students will create a personal timeline for college applications and narrow their college and university lists to schools that will fit their talents and budget.

The college admissions process is complex and competitive. Students and their families can easily become overwhelmed with the burden of preparing and paying for a college education. As a certified School Guidance Counselor in the State of Texas, I am experienced in working with students from a variety of backgrounds, and understand the need for an individualized approach to planning for the first major decision of their adult life.
