Experiencia de clase

Would you like to learn more about Indigenous art? This one-time class will focus on Joan Hill, one of the most celebrated Native women painters of the 20th century. Also known by her Cherokee name, Chea-se-quah, her paintings are renowned worldwide and feature the importance of heritage and culture.

In this class, students will view examples of her work, learn about her personal life, culture and background, and share their thoughts and feelings about her paintings. Joan Hill is known for creating artwork in the Native American art style known as Bacone school, an intertribal style of painting also called "Flatsyle", a pivotal art form that influences art today.

For our painting I encourage learners to bring watercolor paints and art paper. I will demonstrate a painting inspired by Joan Hill's painting, Blessing the Harvest (Gathering Corn), with an emphasis on creating an image of your own family and/or community, celebrating diversity and inclusion.

In my art classes, I prefer to encourage students to find their own unique style rather than to do a step-by-step copy. There is no wrong way to create your artwork! At the end of class, students have the opportunity to share their masterpieces with the class and encourage their fellow students to do so as well. My art classes are always fun, upbeat and positive!

Since technical and motor skills vary, I also offer this same class for ages 12-16 if you have a learner outside of this age range. If you have a learner with any special needs please let me know as I am happy to accommodate!

If you are interested in more art classes that feature Indigenous artists, please consider signing up for my Painted Poems ongoing class, where we will learn about other famous poets, writers and artists.

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
I have been teaching fine art and art history on Outschool since 2018 and host local workshops in my community of NW Arkansas/East Oklahoma, which is local to Muskogee and Cherokee Nation. As a racially diverse professional artist I have attended local Indigenous art seminars and professional development training workshops on cultural representation, appropriation and non-biased instruction in the art world. I am passionate about helping young ones to see and appreciate the diverse world around them as they draw inspiration from the beauty of our global community.
