Prior to the start of class, students will build a race track out of materials they have within their homes.  Race tracks can be built from any material, including regular "Hot-Wheels/Matchbox Car" tracks, or you can even get creative and use something else to create race tracks!  Our class will begin by reading some of the book entitled "Cars Galore!" by Peter Stein and Bob Staake.  Students will practice basic reading comprehension and listening strategies as we review this text, which will be a fun introduction to the topic of our class!  Students are encourage to bring 5 of their favorite toy cars to class, and be prepared to share them with their classmates during a brief show-and-tell.  We will practice graphing, as we sort our cars into color groups, and graph the number of cars within each group!  Finally, students will have the opportunity to show-case their homemade race tracks to their classmates by racing one of their cars down the track!  Students should be prepared to share how they built their track and what materials they used.  All of these activities can be done with parent support or individually, as each student's abilities may differ a bit.
