Experiencia de clase

In this class learners will have an introduction to systemic racism and injustice in the United States of America. This course is ideal for children who are unaware that People of Color face a different reality than those of European descent in almost every facet of American life, from housing to education, to employment to social organizations.

Class One: Ethnicity - Even though the history of Black Americans does not begin with enslavement, that is the perfect place to begin this course because that is where the dehumanization of the race began. We will discuss how Black Americans were stripped of their identity, and forced to adopt a language and religion not their own, how over time developed new identities that were similar yet separate from their slave holding counterparts.

Class Two: Racism - Slavery has existed since the beginning of time, but slavery in the United States was built on the belief that the Black man was inferior and destined for servitude. The belief in the superiority of the Caucasian race prevailed even after the end of slavery and the Civil War and served as a catalyst to shape legislation that prevented Black Americans from fully participating in the "American Dream" and has lasted until modern times.

Young learners will have time to ask questions throughout the lesson about the information presented via slides, maps and video clips. This complex topic will be taught in a way that even the youngest learner will walk away fully understanding the tactics used to prevent Black Americans from experiencing the same level of success as their White counterparts.
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will learn about the ugly truths of racism in the United States of America. This course is not for the children of parents who wish to shield their children from the facts that our nation plotted to limit the growth and movement of Black Americans in this country.

Orientación para padres
Though this course will cover slavery and injustice, due to the age of the student, violence and acts of violence are omitted from the course. We will discuss that slaves were whipped, but no other forms of punishment or torture. With regard to modern injustices against Black Americans we will discuss police brutality, but not killing.

Perfil
Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
As a graduate student with three courses remaining before obtaining a M.Ed in School Counseling and Educational Leadership for Linguistically Diverse Populations, a Certified Teacher and Black American parent of Black American boys who have attended primarily white institutions of learning, I possess both the academic and personal experience to lead learners in inquiry based conversations that will allow them to discover biases that might frame their thinking about Black Americans and share anecdotal as well as published experiences of being in the minority in academic and social settings. My coursework, focuses on culture, ethnicity, race, social emotional learning and the laws which created or hindered the participation of black and brown children in American public schools and the societal pressure which influenced the passing of those laws. I currently teach fifth grade in a major metropolitan Inner City Title I school where race, culture and diversity are discussed daily in class and not just during social studies.
